can I use 4x dvd-r with my 8x dvd-rw drive?

I just bought this drive and it's my first time ever burning dvd.

Yes, you can use 1x DVD-R's on up to 8x. They will not burn any faster than the medias rated speed in most cases.
At 4x the burns will take around 15 minutes for a full dvd.
