Can I do this with Ghost 2003?

I have 3 partitions: C (Windows), D (Applications), and E (Games)

On partition E I only have Quake 3 installed. I customize the game with my personal settings, extra maps, etc.

Sometimes my Quake installation gets corrupt where uninstalling and re-installing do not remedy the problem. If I image only this partition with Ghost 2003 before problems occur, and at some point in the future Quake goes bad on me, can I restore this partition image successfully? Or, does the image require a backup of my C partition simultaneously with the E partition?

I was always restoring complete hd,but when you run ghost 2002 youll see option;backup a drive oir partion!!!

That is true. Ghost 2003 lets you select if you want to backup a partition or the entire HD.

HOWEVER, when you restore, it only asks for the target HD, and NOT THE PARTITION. I though that since the program did not ask what partition to restore, it would be wise enough to know that, but to my dismay it restored the partition onto a HD, and thus erased the other partition that was there !!!:mad:

Shit

So basically the answer to my question is "no". If I attempt to restore that E partition, which contains quake, I will be prompted to choose a DRIVE to restore it to, rather than a PARTITION.

That sucks. I was hoping to do partition restores. I thought that since I could choose a partition to backup I would surely be able to restore it back to the target partition.

Maybe I coud acheive my goal by using the "Cloning" feature with Ghost 2003?

EDIT: Josh22, are you sure about that? I just loaded up Ghost to see the options that are presented, and in fact I can choose a partition to restore. It isn't restricted to a drive only. Just highlight the Partition on the left, rather than the drive, then you can restore that partition to whichever partition you highlight on the right.

If I'm wrong somebody please correct me.

Use it Wedge. It is fast and safe. At all there is only one thing you must be carfully with. When you choose drive for restore. Doubleclick on that drive or select with tabs. and then yuo can see what you get , a partition or erased drive totallly. I have had the same experience , erased a drive with for partitions totally. But that was my fault. I tried to do all on command line in batch mode, without looking after. So long as you are there to look at what is happening when choosing what to do , just use the prog. There is no danger at all

absolutely, completely, totally incorrect.

Well, this brings me around to my original question:

Can I restore the E drive without having to restore the C drive (Windows) and expect the game on the E drive to work properly with Windows again. I'm asking this because I'm assuming that the Windows drive contains all the registry values and who-knows-what-else that make the game a properly installed windows component.

I hope I'm expressing myself clearly here, not sure that am.

it depends where your Quake error is existing;
but i think Quake uses config files in the game directory and no/hardly registry entries; so when you restore only the game partition, it should work; but i won't give a promise;

check it out -> you will know much more;

Quake 3 can be moved..

Duracell is spot on! Quake 3 is a very tolerant game, don't want it on the C:\ drive anymore?, just copy it to wherever you want!, I do this sometimes out of pure laziness..

You haven't been to specific about the problems you're having, are they related to the standalone or some mod that you use with it..?

Saving a partition using Ghost2k3 is overkill for just quake 3.. but there's no harm.. :D

I play Quake 3 Team Arena online. It's an add-on to Quake but it's an official release by the company rather than a third party modification (of course, if you play True Combat then I'm sure you already knew this).

The problem I have is that at some point, it will load extremely slow, if at all. The last time this happened, a week ago, I became so pissed that I decided to install the game, add my customizations, and Ghost it. Yes, I agree it is overkill, but I tried uninstalling, reinstalling, removing all registry entries, deleting leftover folders....you name it and I tried it. After doing these things and reinstalling, the game would load, but at an unbeleivably slow rate. Oh, and I should mention, this goes for the basic Quake 3 installation as well, so it's not just a Team Arena thing. I literally spent hours just trying to get the basic installation to load properly (without even adding a point release).

I have no idea why this problem occurs. For the life of me I cannot pinpoint anything that I might have added, removed, replaced, etc., that would cause it to go south. It just decided not to work properly, out of the blue. I played online one night, everything is good. The next morning its fubared. I have recently thought of going back to the FAT32 filing system because my hunch tells me this could be an NTFS problem with games, although I have no proof of that.

Btw, don't know if this is related, but the ONLY time I ever need to reformat my system is when basic double-click commands in WinExplorer start taking way too long to work. It seems to happen after every 3 or 4 months. Don't know why. It pisses me off just the same because I do nothing to prompt such a change.

Wedge

i'm quite sure restore the Quake partition will not solve your problem; the failure is your system and not the Quake installation; the Windows Indexing Service, XP System Recovery, background programms like Firewall and AntiVirus and "forgotten to defragmenting" are pains for Gaming;

i recommend to setup a dual boot system with XP for working and a clean 98SE for nothing besides extreme fast gaming;

a big minus for:
not able to save an image (from my system partition) to another NTFS partition in "DOS mode" (CD boot);
i like to save in DOS mode, because imaging a running system is always not recommended;

Are you saying that Acronis True Image forces you to make a bootable cd rather than an image to save on your hard drive?

i try to say the TrueImage installation CD is a bootable CD; when you boot from it, TrueImage starts in "DOS mode";
now you can restore images from CD-R/RW or from another partition (of your harddisk) to your harddisk; also you can save images to your CD-R/RW or to another (FAT/FAT32) partition of your harddisk;

all functions are fully comparable with Norton Ghost, beside one thing:
in TrueImage you can't save an image to an NTFS partition, because TrueImage have only read but no write access to an already existing NTFS partition;

in Ghost it's possible and this is one thing i need; because when i save my system partition, i won't toast 5 CDR's; so i like to save the image to another harddisk with an existing NTFS partition;

i hope it's a little bit clearer now

Yes, but after that ask, if the HDD have more than 1 patition, Ghost ask again for 1 partition and you can select only one to restore.

Today I've had problems with my C:\ partition and I sucessfully restored only this one.

C:\ Windows 98
D:\ Windows Xp Pro
(Dual boot system) in the same fisical HDD (I have only one HDD)

Ok, but to do this job, you need create separates partitions images, 1 for each partition you have.
