Can I Copy DVDs 1:1?

Hi,I'am an absolutley newbie, and i have a question. Excuse my english,I'am from Germany :) I want to know if i can make 1:1 copys from movie dvds with a Pioner A04 DVD-Burner. The reason why i ask is,i tried to burn "Friday, the 13th Part 5" and the DVD has a Size from over 6GB,but my DVD-R has just 4,7GB size :-(

Thanks for the fast answer :) What does "CSS Protection" mean?

And i have just downloaded Smartripper, but with all features i need (German Language,Main Movie,No Subtitles) the file is still larger than 4,7GB,so what else should i rip? :-(

And it gives larger DVD-Rs than 4,7GB! I have a dealer account from a firm, that sells them! Here is the dealerprice:

50x Verbatim DVD-R 9,4GB (650nm) 351,00 €
That makes 7,02€ for one WITHOUT taxes...

Can the A04 handle them?

Agree with joripe 100%, I've looked at other tutorials on the web and believe me these are pretty much the best and the easiest to follow. ;)

It's good to study the tutorials to beguin to understand all this DVD-video thing.

As for DVD 1:1 copy, easiest way I know, use ISO option of DVD Decrypter (search this forum to get to it), and in minutes you'll have your 1:1 DVD copy, less it's copy protections including macrovision, and ready to burn or play it from your Hard Drive using Daemon Tools or similar app.

The same DVD Decrypter will do the burning provided you have the DVD burner.

I find DVD Decrypter easier to use than Smart Ripper.

About the size limits of your recordable DVD's, guess only way will be to get bigger DVD-R or rip off some unnecessary files from the original DVD (like trailers, sound in languages you won't use, etc) using the file or IFO options and stream processing. But then it will not be a 1:1 copy. But you'll still have a great 1:1 copy of the movie !!!!

But what should i do if the file is still larger than 4,7GB,after i ripped everything off? :-( For example,i ripped Robin Hood with Smartripper, only the movie with German Language, without everything else, but the File is still 5,6GB :-(

Well, if you ripped only the main movie and still there is no space left, you will have to reencode. You may use the guides at doom9.org for DVD reencoding and authoring, or the guides in this board.

It's not all that simple.
If a DVD is bigger than 4,7GB you'll have to use IFOedit.
This is just the ONLY program that will allow you to do anything.

There are a lot of guides on the net, but for IFOedit i suggest doom9 because the creator of IFOedit is there as well. (derrow)

If you want to make a copy, never stream-strip with Smartripper, because IFOedit will crash if you want to create new IFO's
It's easier to use DVDdecrypter in FILE modus. Copy the needed files to you HD, it will apply DE-CSS, so your DVD on HD is not protected anymore.

If the files are too big, you can strip some streams out, leave the menu, languages, subtitles out etc. (read the IFOedit guide)
If you still have a movie which is too big you'll have to re-encode, OR split the DVD over 2 DVD-R's (also in IFOedit)

Sometimes individual problems can appear, for example DVD's with the WarnerBros Logo will not be re-mepegged correctly, because the logo is non-interlaced and the rest of the movie IS interlaced, so rempeg will be confused. There is also a solution for that (strip VOBid's). Another problem is non-linear timeline (Fast&Furious, End of Days)

But again, there is a lot of learning to to with copying DVD's so go to the guides first and prepare yourself for some coasters ;)
We all started somewhere.. and thanks to Derrow we can get there.
