Can CRC Errors be Fixed ?

as a movie freak, i always d'load movies, most of which are splitted rar archives (usually 40 + files). i use mostly flashget to d'load and some times get CRC errors. re-downloading usually solves the issue. but, this time i am broken hearted. after many a search i found the movie FROM HELL in 47 splits with extensions 001,002 - 047. but 43 of those has CRC errors. i have d'loaded the whole thing twice already, but the errors remain. d'loading through flashget, go!zilla, lightning d'load, getright, bleeding net pumper & extracting through winrar, winzip, winace, power archiver & zip magic totally failed. is there a way to fix CRC errors, any particular program ?

p.s. winrar & winace has recognized these files as rar archives & winrar 3 corporate & zip magic 4 couldn't fix the errors.

Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do about CRC errors. The original files must be corrupt. You have tried downloading with the same results,so I think the movie files are no good.If you can, contact the site. That way you can see if others are having the same problem.Good luck.;)

thanks m8. in the back of my mind, i had this nasty feeling too. now that it is confirmed, i guess, i should try to find some other link to d'load it from. thanks again.

In WinRAR if you go the console way (rar.exe or unrar.exe) there is a command line switch , -kb i think, which will force the program to keep the extracted files even if they're broken (ie crc errors). It might be worth a try although I don't know what the quality of the movie will be.

Ever tried the instructions (some requireing a hex editor) at hxxp://riepersnest.tripod.com/rar/index.htm ? I've fixed a few like this.

Just in case

Make sure any download agent you use DOES NOT split the file as it downloads it. This was an endless source of trouble for me in flashget until i set the file split to 1 part.

I have found that some download managers and FTP clients often cause CRC errors in downloaded archives. Can´t say why but it´s a fact. Today I use Ftp Voyager and MassDownloader and these apps seems to have less problems with this issue.

Are you getting the CRC errors when you try to unpack with Winrar. If so then use the recover in Winrar, When Winrar packs up an ISO file. It also makes a recovery file that you can use to repair a corrupted part. When you unpack Winrar will you a message telling you what file failed the CRC check. make a note of it then high lite it and run repair it when done you'll have a new rar file named recovered.rar delete the corrupted file and rename the recovered.rar file with the one that was broken. If you've got a lot of them you'll have to do the same to each one in turn.

Zoltan - that's a interesting point. i'll try it. m/while, could you pls elaborate ? thanks in advance.

Dysmyl - you have provided a very good link. i also found this /http://sourceforge.net/projects/parchive from there, which is even more interesting. thanks.

deft - i also believe splitting causes this and i tried to d'load w/out splits. but, it became so slow, i gave up (can't afford to d'load 47 files in 47 days !).

LaZorMan - thanks. i'd try ftp voyager & mass downloader

happy1 - thanks. i tried it just now but, still doesn't work.

thanks for the generous helps m8s. i'd keep on working and would get back here for further assistance.

Open a command prompt ( in Win 2k Start ->Programs ->Accessories ->Command Prompt).
Go to winrar's directory ( ie cd c:\program files\winrar or wherever you installed it) and type something like this:
rar e -kb "path to your file" and it will extract it to the same directory. This only seems to work on RAR archives. Hope that helps.

I did encounter a similar problem about a year ago and contacted the rar original file uploader who ensured me the files were right on his side... It turned out I had a defective hd (IBM GXP75)! Not saying it is necessarily your case but I did not consider that my case would be related to this as my previous hd failures were much more eviden such as the infamous "general hd failure"...

I might have misunderstood the original question, but with that many CRC errors I wouldn't even bother to try to repair the files.;)
