can a pro please help me here

Ok here is my delima, I have a 1.6 gig.pent 4 , 640 meg of ram, decaited 40 gig 7200 rpm hard drive , Im using a ati all in wonder 7500 raiden card (agp) now I have the dma all set , and im booting clean into windows using xp pro, nothing running in the background ,,,, Now my task is to be able to capture say 2 hours at most a movie from satallite , Im using S cable for the video and rca cables for audio,
Im capturing with dvd workshop (after trying several otheres) now my video comperssion is YUY2 with 720x480 frame rate, audio bit rate is 256
sample rate is 4800 ,frame rate is 29.970 now i can capture without any frames dropped to a mpeg2 format, getting a file size of about 50 meg a minute or so, after I get the mpeg file, Im using tempgenc dvd author to change the format to vob files , after that i use intervideo dvd copy to burn on to dvd reason for dvd copy is that it will take vob files that are over the 4.7 gig capacityof a dvd and transcode so all will fit onto a single dvd never had any problems with dvd copy works great for other projects..... anyways I just finished my project and viewed it on a stand alone player and im getting jerky frames audio is great nothing wron there at all all in sinc, but still got those shaky frames ...now Im wanting to get the best possible quality I can please help on this Im sure someone knows whats going on with this I would be very gratefuly for any help here thanks all

Hi & Welcome :)

Im not an expert at this so please wait 4 other reply's, but i think that most satellite broadcasts are already compressed maybe as mpeg2, that might be why U are gettin a jerky picture

Like i say wait 4 chickenman 2 reply, he is our resident guru at this kind of thing :)

hey great thanks for at least replying other places no one has even bothered to help a newbie like me (maybe its me ) lol btw I was able to capture some mpeg2 formatt with another program without any jerky frames but problem was after a while I would get dropped frames ..so that was no good If i need to change software so be it ..Im open to any suggestions here thanks again

ps im trying to capture a ppv movie channel from dtv maybe youre right on the mpeg formatt ??? there must be a way to do what im wanting to isnt there??

You make no mention of the captured file playback on your PC. Does it play without the jerks etc ?

I really dont know about NTSC broadcasts but are you sure they are at 27.97 fps rather than 23.976 fps and the decoder box/tv does a Pulldown to 29.97 ? Try capturing a small bit at 23.976

Also, check out the AVI to DVDR Tutorial using DVD2SVCD with CCE to do the encoding and it would encode down to the full DVDR size for you at better quality than what your using. Applies pulldown automatically if needed. Then finally author in TMPGEnc DVD Author.

Hey Thanks For the Tips ... and the fast responce ... Im reading more on that subject now thanks for pointing me in that direction

Hey Chicken man when I capture in 720x480 i get like 70meg per minute capture..... now when i capture a 1hour and 50 min movie im have way to large a file to put on dvd and when i look at it in with windows media player it looks like im getting alot of lines crossing ....what is the best program i can vie my mpeg files with so i can see what they will look like on dvd ? is there something different about the refresh rates that i see on my pc than that of a tv set ? what would you think is the most i can capture as far as resalution with the ati card i have with good quality that is man this thing is killing me here been at it for 12 hours straight please help

In my personal opinion, WinDVD should be the only MPEG/DVD/AVI player you need to install. Playback quality is second to none.

I have been using Ulead VideoStudio 7 of late with some great results. The lines you refer to are probably Interlacing, make sure you turn that off in your capture software.

Raybond, I do these sorts of captures in NTSC regularly. I, too, use an ATI AIW card. But I always capture directly in MPEG2... the encoding is fairly good, and the data rate is FAR reduced from using YUV. This allows the card to operate in a "smoother" fashion. Also, ATI's capture software does a reasonably good job of de-interlacing for you... just turn the option on.

@CM... NTSC broadcasts are definitely in 29.97.

Hey aybesea ,
I would to to say thanks you also for replying , Looks like I have a found a very nice place here ..where people are willing to share their knowledge .... thats wonderful , I really like the ati card so far , I am just trying to get the most of it ... so in youre opinion, you would tell me to capture in mpg format? for best results? like I say I am very new to this capture stuff ... Ripping and buring isnt a problem for me at least it hasnt been so far ...lol but this capturing thing Is driving me bonkers lol Im not one to give up on anything .... so far Ive spent like 40 hours or so on this ... thats too much time to turn tail and run lol so If I capture in mpg format how much time will i get on a single dvd? Im looking for no more than 2 hours with the best quality i can get .. I know the card I have isnt the top of the line But It should do what im wanting to do should'nt it ? so far Ive been using dvd workshop and
dvd movie maker to capture everything Ive read so far tells me ati software isnt all that great .... so even using these capture programs im using I should always turn on the deinterlacing function? by trying to capture a satallite move like ppv which is around 1hour and 50 mins probally max Is what im trying to do called real time ? some told me I need a codec called picvideo by pegass evey hear of it do I need that ? Hey any answers I can get on this Is very Much apprecaited ..... Thanks again guys this place is GREAT

Found this regarding atimmc and svcd settings some time ago(when i had an AIW in my puter)
Worked quite well :)

" 2 things to consider:

1) Bitrate is a little low - set it to about 2.6 Mbits as it allways comes out lower than what it is set to.

2) Shorten your GOP by setting P=4 , B=1 this will provide better motion encoding than the full P=4, B=2 will. Set motion Quality =100 if you have a fast PC.

De-Interlace should be ON as MMC does not do field based encoding.

This should yeild good quality SVCD's. If your DVD player supports higher bitrates try 3.0 Mbit for even better quality and 30 minute CDR's.
If you are going to Edit the MPEG then use constant Bitrate otherwise Variable is ok to use and will typically reduce the file size by 10% or more depending on the video content.

I have done this for "Direct SVCD" captures of TV Shows and it works very well. I usually use 3000K bitrate for best quality although 2600K works well too. At 3000K 30 minutes will fit on a 80 min CDR "

I think you all have me on the right track ..lol im testing clips now with alot better results is this correct its best to capture with the highest bit rate as long i can keep my file sizes close to 4 gig like doing a 1.5 hours movie? and will the variable bit rate change the size all that much when doing a action movie of this size ????? thanks for all you input ......Im almost there looks like lol also invested in some dvd-rw ...now thats the way to go ...lol

Bionic? lets say im wanting to copy a 100 minute show to dvd do you have any settings for that using a dvd for the best of quality ? thanks for all the help here

question????

ok im using mmc 8 here are my settings im captureing at 720x480 vbr, I frames only , does making the bit rate higher make my file size larger and better? I have the motion estimate quality turned off

Soz! didnt see your last q m8 :)

The higher the bitrate the better quality and bigger files(generally).
Best and safest way to go is to keep within the required specs and tweak/record/burn(cd/dvdrw) with fex 90/100/120 etc mins of capture. When capturing to fex xvid(avi) its much simpler to predict final size. Just cap 1 min, compress the audio and multiply final filesize with number of mins.

Havent done caps to dvd, but heres what i used for svcd :
Ati mmc 7.7 Svcd
Mpeg2
480x576 (pal 25fps)
44.100 khz mono - this does not comply with svcd specs though
Deinterlacing
Visual Masking
Pframes : 4
Bframes : 1
VBR
2.27 Mbps
MEQ : 100
Windows Limit
= 90min on 2 800 mb cds

Turned out ok but quality can still be (much) improved.
My reception had some interference and i didnt much care for using 3 cds. So this is a sort of "getting the best out of what ive got" settings :) Also this was for using tvout not a standalone dvd player.

Hey thanks Bionic , thats some really useful info .... thanks again you have helped me alot

ps. the guides were also very useful Bode thanks
