After several very happy years of LiteOn CDRW drive ownership I've retired my trusty 40125S after goodness knows how many thousands of CDR burns, it's one hell of a lot that much I do know! :D

Upgrading to a newer & faster drive seemed pretty pointless to me bearing in mind how little you gain on time, and that only really counts if you burn full CDR's which I hardly do. I spotted www.ebuyer.com/ were selling the above 40X Plex for the joke price of £29.00!!! Yes £29.00!!! And bought some to sell and fitted one in my main system to replace the Litey.

First thing I did was flash the firmware to v1.05 after reading that it had much better media compatibility compared to v1.02 that was on the drive. But I am finding so far that it is slower than my Litey by some way, I'm using FWS branded (Ritek) 48X discs and Clone CD to copy data discs from image files on my HD so they should be fine (No buffer underruns occur either).

Just wondering if any of you have compared this drive to other 40X drives and feel the same way or have maybe had compatibility problems with certain media?

..Waits for the comments on why did you replace your liteon !?

Altho i own a PLEXTOR 24/10/40a even i know that liteons are best for copy protections :)

good purchase tho mate bargain price for still a damn good make drive :)

I rarely do discs that have protection on m8 so not a problem really.

Replaced the drive due to a nasty clunking coming from the inside once the disc went in. And like you said, at that sort of price you cannot turn it down really. The 48X Plex are still about the £70 - £80 mark and a new Litey was £40. :)

Yep I agree, I'm still using my old trusty 16X in another system. They seem to go on forever. :)

The only thing I know about it (don't have it, but a friend of mine has it and he is quite satisfied) is that it's way less picky on media than the problematic 24/10/40 and the 48X fiasco of a burner. Still, if you can stick to the media brands recommended by Plextor you could avoid some nasty surprises.
Personally I have sold a Plex 24/10 recently, and I'm waiting a Liteon 24102b to die before looking for a new CDRW burner, but the time the Litey dies does not seem to be anywhere close- still burning like new after 4000+ burns and less than a dozen of coasters (all of them on CMC media).

Well guess what?

I've only had this drive for a week and I'm afraid it's getting junked!

Why? It will not burn to any damn disc whatsoever at more than 24X! I usually use Ritek CDR's and I've tried others but still no go and I can't be bothered to mess about with it.

So it's back to happy LiteOn ownership for me tomorrow when I get a new 52X to replace it! :)
