Burnt cd appearing as empty in DVD drive

Hello!

Not sure I'm posting in the correct forum; this seems the most appropriate for the problem I am currently experiencing. I'd be most grateful if someone can help with a really weird problem.

I have a CDR I have burnt on my 8x HP CD-RW drive containing nothing but divx .avi files - this drive displays all the files when viewed through explorer and they work fine on opening them.

The problem comes when I put the same CDR into my Matshita SR-8583 DVD-ROM drive - this drive scans the CDR for a while. On double-clicking the DVD drive I am then asked to insert a disc. Occasionally it does explore to the CDR, but then it appears there are no files on the CD.

I'm running WinXP, I've used Nero 5 to burn, and the CDRs are a pretty good branded quality.

Any ideas anyone...? pretty please?

In truth it is hard to say what can be causing this problem. Often it is something you installed that has messed up some registry or recognition ability of your drive.
Other times it is some VxD driver that was corrupted somehow.
Perhaps the best thing to do here is use some sort of diagnostics tool and see if there is something found that needs repairs.
Have you installed anything recently? (like a Service Pack)
It is also quite possible that your drive just doesn't like the media brand you are using, regardless of whether it is branded or not. Have you checked for a bios/flash update for your DVD-ROM drive?
It's also possible you didn't burn them properly. Did you check the "finalize" when you got to the burn stage in Nero?
Sorry, just trying to think of what the issues can be, and I can't possibly narrow it down to 1 thing without more info.
Good luck and hopefully you find out what's wrong.

Check you ASPI it maybe corrupt... do a double check and reinstall your ASPI... use the search fuction or a good search engine to look for it... install adaptec v4.6xx 1st... then if all good you may want to try v4.7xx if problems occur rollback to v4.6xx... :D

Has the Matshita SR-8583 DVD-ROM drive able to read other CDR's or just the recent ones your written with the avi's on it? Can you read another CDR that you know that has worked/read before?

Many thanks for the replies - I'll give the various suggestions a try when I get home from work. :)

One further point I moticed last night that may be of use - i put a few CDRs into this drive containing numerous file formats including a few .exes, .zips and divx .avi's. With CDRs containing a range of file types, such as this, my DVD drive had no problems in recognising all the files present. I could also open the .avi's from these CDRs without problems. (Therefore I'm assuming that we can rule out the brand of CDR).

The problem only seems to occur when the CDR purely contains .avi file(s).

Once again, thanks for the help so far - if the info. above help ring any bells then i'll be checking back here regularly.
:)

Thanks for that scarecrow, you on the right forum?

By the way I've also had 1618 portscan tries today my firewall reports:-

ICMP PING CyberKit 2.2 Windows from _http://www.snort.org/snort-db/sid.html?sid=483

Have no idea what thats all about.

Hello again,

Just to let you know, I have installed both Adaptec ASPI v4.6 and v4.7 without any problems, yet im still unable to view files on purely .avi CDRs.

I havent installed any Service Packs recently, but to be honest I think this problem has been present since I upgraded to XP; I have just never got around to looking into it in any depth.

Last night, after installing the ASPI drivers, I tried a few different methods to see if I could in fact view the contents of an example CDR. I tried various different combinations of actions - e.g. putting the CDR in, then opening it in explorer before its had chance to autoplay; opening explorer first, putting the CDR in, then refreshing, etc.

I did actually manage to view the contents of the CDR as normal once using the second method, but have so far been unable to replicate this. The majority of the time the DVD drive either scans the CDR for ages, then asks me to insert a disc into the drive, or allows me to open the drive, but then shows no files.

Curiouser and curiouser... :|

How have you actually burnt the AVI's to cdr? You say you used Nero, was that Data mode, multisession on or off, Juliet , ISO 9660, etc. Your settings please.

Sorry... I'm not too knowledgable about this type of thing..
Basically I use the Nero wizard to write a Data CD and accept all the defaults.. and I always check to Finalise the burn

is that any help?

Do you have ISOBuster or CD Diagnostics? I'd be real interested to see if this disc is actually finalized. It sounds like an unclosed session, to me.
