I have just bought and installed a Pioneer 106D DVD writable drive, (VERSION 1.07) Unfortunately every time I try to do a back up to a DVD re-writeable disk using Roxio drag - to - disk I get the following error messages.

I have 3 different types of DVD media, as follows:-

MAXWELL DVD+RW 4.7GB single sided rewritable 1 - 4x speed = "format operation failed on drive E:\ the drive has reported a problem with the media" or "Please insert a disk"

VERBATIM DVD+RW 2.4 - "format operation failed on drive E:\ the drive has reported a problem with the media" or "Please insert a disk"

DATASAFE MEDIA DVD-RW "there is no disk in the drive"

I have 1 different type of CD-RW media, as follows:-

BASF - CD-RW 1-4X SPEED - this disk is read only (!?)

When using Nero drive speed it show the correct type of DVD in the drive. E.g DVD+RW

Please help I am unable to use the drive to do any backups at all. I have upgraded the Roxio software to best it can be, the same problems where also occurring with Nero 6 - it would not format the disk with reading a burn error.

I also have upgraded Bios and Motherboard, the Pioneer 106 drive is on Secondary Master, I have my HDD on Primary Master and the Nec1300a drive on Primary slave.

I run Windows XP Pro with Roxio easy cd/dvd 6.
Aspi is up to date using the software on the pioneer website.
I have looked at various other website help forums and follows all the hints and tips e.g. checking DMA is on, checking autoplay, etc…

thanks

After I read your message yesterday i went ahead and tried to see if I could do the same with my system using a Verbatim DVD+RW 2.4 Speed Vitesse
At first it gave me hell, gave the same story you got, must say I had used the disk before did a full format using nero 6.3.02 went through OK but would not record used my HP 200i to do the same with the same verion Nero, but had the same results format fine system could not recognise the file system?
So i thaught try a different approach used Recordnow Max latest version would not recognise disk either now a bit puzzeled what else can go wrong.
I do a quick format using Recordnow Max on my 106 firmware 1.07 and guess what it now was willing to record no error messages did a perfect burn of a nearly 4 gig image and results are it works.

So my point is try to do a quick format before trying to record see if it makes a difference

 Thanks for replying, I have managed to get a copy of RecordNow Max 4.10. When clicking the icon for this the following message appears “No compatible recordable or rewriteable devices could be found on your system. Would you like to check if an update is available?” I have down loaded the updates (PX engine 358) from the Stomp website, however this message still appears.

If I use the wizard it does detect both of my recorders (the Pioneer shows as a DVD-RW??!!) , RecordNow will not detect any disc whether -?+ in the Pioneer drive.

When try to burn with the NEC + verbatim 2.4 disk I am allowed to drag items to the disk (cool!! Finally) - it says that it is writing the disk - then I still get errors coming up and burning stops. “There is a problem writing to the disk. You can try again by clicking the retry button”

When I try to burn with the NEC + Maxwell, again I am allowed to drag items to the disk (It is playing with me!!!!!) - it says that it is writing the disk, make a funny noise in the drive and burning stops. “There is a problem writing to the disk. You can try again by clicking the retry button”

Pioneer actually has a section for FAQ check it out you might find the part interesting regarding the setting PIO only, if it says PIO only in the geyed out section under See attached jpec highliht section change the section to PIO only and restart system. Had to do it a couple of times with mine before it finaly recognised the DVD Burner correctly. even went as far as removing it fom the system manager and reistalling it after I rebooted the system.
By the way that is the channel my DVD is on.

Let us know how it goes

 Have changed from DMA to PIO, unfortunately it has made no difference :(

I also have ASPI Layer 4.60 installed.
I have taken some screen captures of important screens for you to view.

Just one question you have set the drives as Master and Slave have you not.

If you have go and unistall both drives from within the Device Manager section shut down your system and swap the drives around using the Pioneer as the Master and the NEC as the Slave.

Pioneer recomends setting the Pioneer as the Master and as a stand alone recorder to avoid conflicts with other drives if you have the option go and do that if not make sure the Pioneer is the master on the second IDE channel it should work fine even with DMA enabled.

Hiya
All the above was in place anyway. I am going to take drastic action this week and reformat my hard drive and reinstal everything. Pioneer have recommened using Nero 6 as they say that this is the most reliable. They also say to definately use DMA (especially for 105 and 106 drives) they are under the impression is a software conflict. Which I sort of knew anyway.

What is the best way to make sure that my MOBO is up to date? I have a Jetwat V226B, I have checked their website, however it is not very clear.

thanks again for all your help :D

Have attached the info for your mobo driver page as a jepc file should point you the wright way Sorry couldn't find the V226B board as you said you had.

I am having problems with Nero 6, every time I try to burn a DVD+/-R I get the same error “burn error 2.4x (3,312KB\s), I believe this is something to do with the Sense key 5h - illegal media, although I have tried many different types of media in my Pioneer 106D drive.

When burning process fails: - log attached
Nero version: 6.3.0.2
Windows XP pro
Motherboard, Bios, Pioneer 106D drive all updated

I have re-formatted my guard drive to have just Nero 6 running with my rewritable drive
Pioneer 106d 1.07
D:
HDD on Pri/Mas - Pioneer rewriter 106D on Sec/Mas
DMA if available is ticked
I do not have a disconnect option in device manager?!!
VIA bus master IDE controller
Printer and scanner are USB
V266B - VIA KT266A and 8233A Chipset Support Socket-A for AMD Athlon /Duron at 266MHz.
.4x AGP VGA Mode .Support ATA133 .On-board 3D Audio
.Support 168-pin DIMM and 184-pin DDR RAM

no conflicts in XP device manager
ASPI has is at latest version
No other burn softwareOnly Nero 6 to avail conflict

When using Nero drive speed it show the correct type of DVD in the drive. E.g DVD+RW

Please help I am unable to use the drive to do any backups at all. I have upgraded the Nero software to best it can be.

Have done some more research into your and my problem found a soultion on the Pioneer webside.

It is pretty simple first go to your device Manage select your CD Rom drives one by one and right click to uninstall.
Shut down your system unplug both drives then restart after a complete restart shut down again and plug in your master first (mine is the Pioneer 1.06) then restart. give it a go with your DVD+RW should read fine do a test Burn if OK go and Shut down again to Plug in you slave CD-Rom and again start your system try to do another test burn should still work.

It solved my primary problem it still works as it should stuffed my sound up but that is an IRQ conflict problem with my USB 2.0 Card I have.

Let us know how it went

I have done this and my PC will only detect my Pioneer DVD writer as a CD Rom drive.

Any ideas?

OK done some more research and have come up empty.
As for your last problem make sure that your IDE cable is plugged in correct and secure.
Check on the post start screen if both your drives are listed correctly.
Check to see if both drives are set one as master and one as slave, the master at the end of the IDE cable and the slave on the middle connector.
try a different cable you know is good as an alternative, as somtimes a faulty cable can give you hell.
