Bootable Hard Disk Image for Windows XP

I have a laptop with no internal CD Writer and so I have to use external USB CD Writer. I want to make a backup of my hard disk and make them bootable, so that the backup can replace the original Recovery CDs from the computer maker. I've tried NTI Backup NOW! 3.0 and also STOMP Backup MyPC and they didn't work (The CDs failed to boot).

My OS is Windows XP.

Does anybody have a suggestion on this?

norton ghost [at least when i last checked] dosent support writing to external usb cd-rw drives thats on v7.0 at least

Ghost 2003 does however. :)

I have been thinking about doing this myself but have not researched it at all yet. So, once you find a good/easy way to do it, please post back with the software and steps used. I'm sure it would help many. Thanks!

Norton Ghost 2003 does support external USB CD-Writer, but unfortunately the supported drives are only a few, and mine is not supported. Symantec said that other drives than listed might work, so I will give it a try.

I have only one partition and one hard disk. The file system is NTFS. How do I back it up? It's impossible to clone a HD to its self.

When you have enough diskspace to store ghostimages, you can split in primary and extended on the fly with pqmagic, but such operations are somehow risky.

1.Partition your hdd using Partition Magic v8.0
2.Create at least 2 partitions..one active and the other logical
3.Install Ghost 2003 on your active partition
4.Use Ghost to make an image of your active partition onto your logical partition
5.Burn this image to CDR(s)..they may be split to suit your setup.
