This will be a tough one because many writers out there can't cut the tough Safedisc 2.5.021 and the new SecuROM *new*. My money is on the Asus drives!

Safedisc 2.5.021 protected games: Command&Conquer Renegade, Medal Of Honor, Serious Sam (second edition), Ghost Recon, Grand Theft Auto 3.
I'm sure there's more to add to this list.
SecuROM *new*: Warcraft 3, Neverwinter Nights.
I'm sure there's more to add to this list as well.

Plextor units aren't what they used to be. Some Asus units and almost any unit of LiteOn are the perfect partner for that job. Dumno anything 'bout Memerex MAXX.

if it's for CCD....i would say....
ASUS CRW-3212A , CRW-4012A

Clonecd version 4 and a liteon 24102B,I've backed up all versions of protection (safedisc 2,safedisc 2.5.021 and securom) and not ONE coaster. Cloney protection detector is a MUST.

Lite-On for sure. Asus isn't as good as thought to be.
& I know asus cd-rom drives are among the worst (also their DVD drives), so I wouldn't take my chances with their cdrw drives.
Could be wrong, but just my thought on that brand.

shadoe_phantom,
The Asus 40&48x models can cut the safedisc 2.5.021 and the SecuROM *new* cd protection. In fact, these 2 Asus drives outperformed the LiteOns in a recent hardware test. (CD-R Info).
The LiteOn's are spectular drives, but many people are switching over to the Asus 40&48x models. (CD-Freaks).
Hardware tests (Asus, LiteOn).. CloneCd read.

have seen the tests Shoeb, & they aren't great. Big deal if they read faster by 2%. That doesn't concern me much. Don't get me wrong, the Asus drives are ok, but they have a bad rep for cheap parts & not able to read too well some cheapo disks (what most pirated CDs are).
But then again you can always use your other reader for those lol.
Lite-Ons can also do the safedisc & securROM 3 protections, just a matter of settings.
I would just wait & see how long the Asus drives last for first. These are new & at first TDK had amazing reviews also, but after a few months, nobody wanted them anymore. Hopefully the Asus will be one to last, 'cause I don't care what brand I use (I have no loyalty to brands, just quality) as long as it performs well & lasts.

Don't beleave de HYPE just you wait Lite-on if dis is de problem will av ah firmware update not to long.....;)
Someone I know can get workin copies wit dem Liteon burner they also av ah Toshiba dvd rom for de above protection.
I'll try & find out more about her setup.

This entire thread seems like you guys don't like TEAC units. Why is this so? Did someone tested TEAC CD-W540E with CloneCD 4?

LiteON opinion

I believe the LiteON writers are the best on the market.

Plextor has hugely overpriced its models for the modern market. The newest LiteON can be found in England for sub one-hundred pounds whereas the same outlets are charging in excess of £150 for a mediocre Plextor alternative.

It is not only the price which is attractive however. With my comparatively old (bought in November 2001 - at PC World!!) 24102B I have backed-up EVERYTHING that I've tried. This includes all versions of SafeDisk upto the very newest and also the supposedly problematic recent recoding of SecuROM. Even my girlfriend's 12102B had no trouble when she copied the expansion for Diablo II, Black and White or Icewind dale.

The only slight caveat I would make is for music CD's. To my IMMENSE annoyance the LiteON was unable to make a copy of Cactus shielded disks for the car - or even rip to MP3. This severely angered me in obscene terms as the first such I came accross was 'White Lillies Island' - and I have been a Natalie Imbruglia fan for some time. After a lot of research I read the actual device itself lacks the necessary electronics to read Cactus - and presumably other protections - disks. Apparently Plextors do. Also I have been told the actual audio accuity of a Plex drive is superior to the LiteON. This is something I have not found for myself - and both sound identical to me.

Maybe if music copying is your thing Plextor models may require consideration. So far as I am concerned LiteON is the machine of choice. When the laser diodes on mine eventually fail I will replace the machine with another from the same badge.

Just bought 40 speed Liteon...brilliant.
Used Clone and 12 speed media , and it wrote the CD in 1min 30 secs, and at 35 speed
Best £54 worth ever !!

Although AWS is supported from Plextors, I wouldn't buy a Plextor again. I would switch to a TEAC or a Liteon. Since you ask for CloneCD performance, I believe the Liteon would be perfect for you.
