Best formatting/erasing software?

What software is the best for formatting/erasing the content on DVD-RW's? I've tried Nero 6, Pinnacle InstantWrite, Roxio, Gear, RecordNow Max and they've all turned my RW's into coasters.

Any suggestions?

How about what kind of drive you have (with firmware) and media (manufacture ID). For all we know you used DVD-Rs. :D

I have a pioneer A05 with the original firmware. I haven't updated the firmware yet, as I am not famailir with the process, and I don't want make the drive unusable. And I don't want to use any hacked firmware either

All those applications you mentioned should work. However, since you have Roxio with any other apps, that could be an issue. Does not play well with others. You can also DISABLE the imapi service. Try putting the 105 on its own IDE cable as master. If you have AMD m/b, do NOT install the VIA IDE drivers. Then try again.

maybe its because I'm formatting them before I write to them, which may screw it up, could that be a possibility?
That could be possible I've had dvd-rw media allow me to right to it once. Well also you don't need to format first time you use it. I've also found some media rw to be junk with my 104 like Memorex and some older OPTODISC (OW470-000). As far as what the Memorex media was I don't remember and I counldn't find my post. :( You never told us what the media is you use? I would say use DVD Decrypter to tell us what the Manufacturer ID is.
Start DVD Decrypter => Source (drive where you have blank rw) => Mode => ISO => Read (make sure the check is on read)
Then your box on the right will look something like this:
This happens to be CompUSA brand DVD-RW (OPTODISC) That work great for me.

DVD Decrypter Disc Information:
Status: Empty
Erasable: Yes
Free Sectors: 2,298,496
Free Space: 4,707,319,808 bytes
Free Time: 510:48:46 (MM:SS:FF)
Maximum Write Rate: 1,385 KB/s (1x)

Pre-recorded Information:
Manufacturer ID: OPTODISCK001

Physical Format Information:
Book Type: DVD-RW
Part Version: 2
Disc Size: 120mm
Maximum Read Rate: 10.08Mbps
Number of Layers: 1
Track Path: Parallel Track Path (PTP)
Linear Density: 0.267 um/bit
Track Density: 0.74 um/track

If you have ALL the above you mentioned installed in parallel, then I can assure you they will turn your CD-R's/DVD-R's to coasters, too.
Just get sensible and use only what you really want, and not what you can leech.
