That could be possible I've had dvd-rw media allow me to right to it once. Well also you don't need to format first time you use it. I've also found some media rw to be junk with my 104 like Memorex and some older OPTODISC (OW470-000). As far as what the Memorex media was I don't remember and I counldn't find my post.
You never told us what the media is you use? I would say use DVD Decrypter to tell us what the Manufacturer ID is.
Start DVD Decrypter => Source (drive where you have blank rw) => Mode => ISO => Read (make sure the check is on read)
Then your box on the right will look something like this:
