Best DVD H/W + S/W

I'm looking at getting a DVD writer for Xmas and wanted some general advice.

I want to be able to back up my data to DVD (rewriteable pref) and also back up my DVD films (originals).

Looking at the writers, it seems the quickest is 8x, is this true? Does the current media support 8x (I only seem to be able to find 4x).

What software will I need?

With regards CDRW I've used HP (4x), Plextor (24x) and currently have Liteon (52x), following recommendations on this site - thanks!!

Well Pioneer seems like the best all around dvd burner at the moment. 8x burners are out but it's still hard to find the media and also expensive. In time that will change so, if you have the money invest in the 8x. To do all the things that you mentioned you want to do with the drive you will need some on these programs(Clonedvd,Alcohol 120%,Dvdshrink,Pinnacle,Nero). Good luck on getting your burner and there will be plenty of help here when you need it.
