Best DVD converter in terms of quality ?

Hello,
I've dropped this forum for quite some time, I try to catch up.
What is, as of today, the best program to get the best video quality DVDR ?

Anyone could point me to tests/pictures comparisons/... ?

Thank you

Do you mean to convert as in .avi to DVDR or shrink down from DVD 9 to DVD 5?

If first agree with jim on Procoder, I'm fast becoming quite a fan of this. :)

For best quality DVD>DVDR then no question that CCE is best, take a look at some of the threads on DVD-Rebuilder which makes this process a real no brainer and great little bit of kit.

HTH :)

Yes, sorry for my poor choice of words. Encoders, for DVD9 --> DVD5.

I followed Chickenman's Rebuilder tut (thanks again), but I got an error after the "Transcode" part, something about ECL.
So, instead of having the paths to CCE pointing to ECL, I point it directly to CCE, and I get this: "No CCE path has been set. Use menu Options/Setup to configure."

Mind you, I never managed to have CCE working correctly

Aha, if you are using CCE 2.50 SP you do need to use the EcLCCE.exe file. My guess is you did not activate it firstly by double-clicking on the EcLCCE.exe file and pointing it then to your CCE 2.50 .exe. This only ever needs to be done once when setting everything up.

All should work fine once that is done. :)

Yes! That was that :)
Thank you all, now I got it working.

OMW to some quality testing now.

Thanks again for a fantastic forum, guys.

FWIW, DVD9 to DVD5 is transcoding (for lack of a better word), it's mpeg to mpeg.
Avi (or other format) to compliant mpeg is encoding.

Laz, glad your liking Procoder. I though I'd give it a go again (havent tried it for a LONG time!) Had a 1.4gb Xvid with AC3 audio, 1hr 57min long. Ran the Procoder Wizard, set to Highest-Quality 2 pass VBR. Took 9hr 17min to encode on my AMD 3200 !!!!!! Bloody hell, so long. Hate to have selected Mastering-Quality. Then it was a bit to big and jerky as hell on playback. Realised it selected Interlaced, so started to re-do it Non-interlaced, it then said it was going to to take 22hrs, so I cancelled out.

Ran the same avi then through D2SRoba plugin with DVD2SVCD using CCE 2.50, it took 1hr 6min to encode and an overall total time of 1hr 22min. Thats more like it.

As for quality, sorry but I recon CCE did a better job actually, but then the RoBa method using OPV encoding is equivalent to a normal 4-5 VBR pass. I know what I'll be sticking with. :D

Erf :(
Everything went OK with ReBuilder and CCE (?), but the VIDEO_TS folder I got is 5.35 Go. Arrrrrrg

@ChickenMan: Thanks again for yoru job on your tutorials, they are _awesome_ and helped me many times

DVDShrink:
Yes, but I'll lose a lot in video quality, no ?

The point in using CCE is getting a very high vidqual.
If not, i'd be using DVD2One or something like that, 1 click nothing to do boom DVDR, or am I wrong ?

If your encoded a DVD down to 5.3gb with RB, then to Shrink it to 4.35gb with Shrink I feel would be 2 much loss in quality.

5.3g from RB seams like a huge file size, I dont think I have read anyone ever getting that large a final file. What settings have you used? What version of RB you using ? get ver 0.52 if your using anything earlier. Dont click on "One Pass VBR" as thats still a bit experimental (beta!). You should then end up with a 4.30 gb VIDEO_TS folder.

Or use DVDREMAKE 2.0 Pro first and next RB works fine :)

I followed the instructions in your tutorial to the letter. Just a little thing was different, the menu Options-->AVS Options is a little different now.

I used the latest version, ReBuilder 0.52, with close to default settings.
Menu Mode:
CCE Mode checked
One Click Mode checked
Dynamically assign cell bitrates
checked
all the rest unchecked

Menu Options
AVS Options-->ConvertToYUY2() checked
AVS Options--> AudioDub(BlanckClip()) checked
AVS Options-->all the rest unchecked

CCE Options --> One Pass VBR unchecked

QuEnc Options--> Trellis Quant checked

Your right the latest ver does have a few more options, they were changing almost daily so I've waited for it all to settle down. I must update the Tute as its been more than a week since an update!

All those settings are correct. All I can suggest it to try another DVD as it could by just that DVD in question. Also worth a search/read at doom9's site http://forum.doom9.org/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=75

Now I'm confused. Shrink, IC8 etc, will transcode, but doesn't CCE re encode?

@ Okapi,

If perchance you are attempting to back up a DVD 9 to DVD±R the easiest/simplest/quickest way is using AnyDVD/CloneDVD 2 combination. Both of these software programs are top notch and are almost foolproof in use. I have transcoded a 3 hour DVD 9 movie to DVD-R and cannot detect any derogation in picture quality. Both of the programs have full-featured limited time (14 day) demos.

Coaster
