Best CD-ROM/DVD-ROM Reader For CloneCD 4?

I have a Plextor 16/10/40A burner and I HAD a Toshiba 40X burner until it died today. I was looking at the Lite-On LTD 163 dvd/cd-rom reader. I want to make sure that it will work well with my Plextor burner and with CloneCD 4! Has anyone had any experiences with this Lite-On drive and/or does anyone suggest a better drive for working with Clone. My main concern is not that it has a dvd-rom in it but that it will read my burned software from my sexy Plexy.

Thanx,

The liteon Dvd rom drives 163 & 165 are good readers Their DAE is superb. The Clone team always recommend the Toshiba DVD rom drives. So I would say it is down to these 2 manufacturers.

Thanx Woody...do you think I should go with a combo or would a straight cd-rom be a little better such as the Lite-On LTN-526 cd-rom? Would it be a better reader for burned discs since it's simply a dedicated cdrom? Thanx

I would still go with the two mentioned Liteon Dvdrom drives. They are well documented as good readers. It seems you are leaning toward Liteon.I can't comment on the Liteon Cdrom drive,as I haven't heard much about it.

Just go to Cdrinfo for more help deciding.Check out their dvd roundups under the hardware section.;)

Well, I looked at that review and that did help me. What I need to know really is which would read a burned cd better? The Lite-On LTD-163 or the Lite-On LTN-526 52x? I don't need a new dvd-rom but the one I have is an old Pioneer 104S 10xdvd32xcd. I've noticed that the Lite-On cdrom has an access time of 80 ms, while the dvdrom has an access time of 120 ms. Do you think that would make any games say run any slower at all? I wouldn't think so. Also..Woody....if you were to pick between the dvdrom and the cdrom...which would you choose?

Thanx,

Pokopiko, I mainly use my cd-rom drive for: running original and burned software and ripping audio cd's. It sounds like to me that the LTD-163 may be a little more superior to the LTN-526. When I rip audio cd's, I usually do it with my Plextor. I just want to get the best drive that will properly execute my burned cd's and of course original ones too. Would the slower access time of 120 ms for the LTD-163 make a big difference between the LTN-526's 80 ms access time? From what you said about some bad 526's that the 163's may be a little more stable even though it can happen to anything.

My old Pioneer drive will be put in the box if I get the LTD-163 since I will no longer need it anymore. Besides..I'll free up a bay if I get that one!

Thanx for the info!

I would agree that the Lite-On or Toshiba or Sony (1612DDU types) work well with reading anything. I have all of these & they can read everything well (except the lite-on with some music CDs).
Any of those choices would be fine I would think.
Good luck

Goin' With the LTD-163!!

Alrighty then guys....I want to thank you very much for your help and it has helped indeed. From reading reviews at cdrinfo.com and a few other sites to talking to you guys, it seems that the 163 will be going in my system. This will also make my system cooler too as a side advantage!! So thanx again Woody, pokopiko, joripe and shadoe_phantom!!

An extra advantage is that you can make the LTD163 region free...if there comes a time that you decide to do movie ripping, this can be handy.....;)
Cool...thanx.....can you point to any good sites that explain how to do ripping? I've never tried to before. Thanx

Excellent...I can't wait to get this drive now. If my Toshiba had not gone bye bye, then I would not have been looking for a new drive!
