Best Burner for Audio

I am in the market for a burner that is CloneCD compatible and does an excellent job of ripping and burning audio CD's. Anyone have any advice ? Thanks in advance !!

Plextor's are supposedly better than the rest for audio, but I've yet to see any conclusive proof of this. Its mostly just an opinion.

You can't go wrong with Plextor, Lite-On, or TEAC. They are all considered the best.

I own both a Plex and a Lite-On...so you can say I have the best of both worlds.

thanks !

Thank you for your input ! I was looking at the three dxkim mentioned.

dxkim,

Is there any noticeable difference between the Lite-on and Plextor in terms of quality ? It really doesn't matter to me whether one is quicker than the other by 10 sec. or whatever. The reason I ask is because the Lite-on is approx. $100.00 cheaper (in Vancouver, Canada at least) than the Plextor.

Thanks again in advance !!

I own a 40x Lite-On and the one negative thing about it is Feurio does not support this drive yet. This really sucks because Feurio is my favorite program for burning mp3's to cd. I emailed Feurio and they're waiting for Lite-On to send the required data to them whatever that is. I also email Lite-On but they never responded which from what I hear is typical for them as they have very poor customer service.

I stand corrected. Feurio just put up a driver update for the Lite-On 40x drive. It's now supported. :D :D :D
Time for me to start burning some cd's with Feurio instead of Nero. :D

My personal evaluation of a Plex 40x (PX4012TA) and a Lite-On 40x (LTR-40125S) with TDK (Taiyo Yuden) CDR media is as follows...

I extracted Audio and burned them with EAC. I copied the Game, Serious Sam: THE SECOND ENCOUNTER, which uses Safedisk 2 (v2.51.021) with CloneCD. Also did some data disks with RecordNowMax.

There were minor differences in speed depending on the drive, but nothing worth mentioning. The audio quality was the same. The Plex copied Serious Sam with AWS on while the Lite-On did not need it.

The differences:
1) Lite-On was $70.00 cheaper $99.00 compared to $170.00
2) Plextor was more solid build quality, especially with the CD tray.
3) Lite-On does better with AWS (ie, Safedisk 2 protected games).
4) The Plex had less C1 errors (ie minor errors you can't hear, but every CDR has. Your CD player's error correction fixes these) than the Lite-On, but it wasn't that much.
5) A leaked Lite-On firmware for the LTR-40125S give you a P-CAV drive (better, faster CD burning) and Mt. Rainier support (Packet Writing-CDRW that really works!). The official firmware should be available soon (when its more stable). Not bad for a simple firmware upgrade! In Plextor's defense...they have announced
Mt. Rainier support in an upcomming firmware.

So...as much as I hated to do it (as I'm a Plex devotee), I returned the Plex and kept the Lite-On. It was a hard decison, but in the end the game copy ability and cost were the deciding factor. I still have my Plex 8432 for nostalgic reasons though ;)

And most reviews agree with my assessment. The Lite-On has a slight edge.

In fact, according to various internet rumors...the Lite-On 40x MIGHT be able to upgrade to the new 48x burner that was just announced by Lite-On. It is rumored that this new drive is just an overclocked LTR-40125S. Again...not bad for a simple firmware upgrade! But this is just a rumor...so take it for what its worth! ;)

Another point worth considering is that the Plex can rip both Key2Audio & Cactus Data Shield protected CDs using the PlexWriter software. As far as I know, no other drive does this.

Cheers, Beastie.

My Lite-On 40x has successfully copied Star Wars: Attack Of the Clones and Celine Dion's latest (both Key2Audio protected). Used EAC and no other tricks. The Star Wars CD would not load up in EAC the first time, but restarting EAC again allowed it to be seen and extracted. Our drives are not the only ones that can do this either...it appears that the software is key (no pun intended).

BTW, the drive change that I spoke of Lite-On 40x upgrading to a 48x (LTR-40125S->LTR-48125W)... has successfully done via firmware update. Iv'e done it and it appears the make the 40x an even better writer! Check out CDfreaks.com for mor info.

Audio Burner

According to both experiences and statistics, good Audio Burners are Plextors, TEACs and Yamahas...

Especially the TEAC CD-W540E (40x) and the Yamaha CRW-3200E (24x) have Quality and stability features for Audio CD Writing... But when it comes to the price, the TEAC is a much cheaper solution and in a higher speed capability... Personally I bought the TEAC at the price of 140 Euros, while the Yamaha is at 185 Euros... Plus the TEAC has a 2 year warranty (valid in Europe).
