BenQ sells firmware update for DW800

Wow!!! Let hope this isn't a new trend!!
BenQ released a firmware update for the DW800A DVD+RW enabling 2x2 DVD-R/RW writing to the drive.

Unfortunately, the company offers upgrade for a US$10 fee. On the other hand, somebody might claim that it is better to pay a fee than buying a brand new burner with DVD-R/-RW recording capabilities.

BenQ says the charge for the DVD-R/RW supported firmware is due to the royalty fee incurred for usage of the DVD-R & DVD-RW format. As such, the purchased firmware should be used for one drive only. For each successful transaction, a Serial Number (S/N) will be provided in order to activate the downloaded firmware. Each S/N is entitled to one activation only and non-refundable.

Before downloading the firmware, please read the BenQ FAQ. To start the Payment Transaction procedure, click Here.
Thanks cdrinfo for the info.

I doubt they'll manage to keep a lid on it, though it would be against forum rules to offer it here (different to the situation on the Liteon 401s->411S as although there could be an issue of licence fee, THEY do not offer a legitimate way to resolve it).

If they charge for that upgrade, it had better make the drive a damn good +/- writer ... very few drives are equal in both, and where a +R line of drives moves to dual, the performance on -R is usually weak (and the same is true for -R drive makers extending to +R) - for the "away" format of media, media compatibility is often VERY limited.
