beginner question

Hi all...I am quite new to DVD burning but I have what many would think to be a newbie question so here it goes:
I downloaded 10 episodes of a show released on DVD. The download said it was a DVD rip. The total size of the download is almost 6 gig. Even though the original box set where these files came from fit all ten episodes onto only 2 DVDS, when I try to burn, I cannot even fit three episodes onto a single DVD 4.7. I assume the original files are compressed in a certain way....and this is where I need help. The files I downloaded ARE NOT vob files, they actually play in my media player (AC3 files) and each file is about 500 meg in size. I have no idea on how to compress and was wondering if I could get pointed in the right direction. Thank you. :D

thank you for the reply Duracell. I am at my office now but I will check when I get home. I seem to remember seeing mpeg-4 somewhere when I checked it...but then again I used a program called .avi Info to do it so I am assuming they are .avi files. I was searching the forum and seem to think dvd-shrink would be a good bet for me....let me know what you think. Thanks again.

Thank you Viper, I will take a look at it. Does it make sense that the files from a dvd-rip can be .avi files? Is that the most common form used to rip from an actual DVD?

yes most people like to RIP the WHOLE dvds to AVI as it will fit on a single CDR they are usually DIVX or XVID compressed as these are the most common that give the extension .AVI as a resulting file :)

altho with the upsurge in dvd burners they have become less popular for obviosu reasons :)

if you get any technical problems ask in the section that seems appropriate and ask our resident GURU's here at the forum with CHICKENMAN being the most likely to have a quick resolve as he wrote most of the guides here and good at them he is too :)

I wish all of my dvd-rip downloads were as simple as the ones where the files are already vob and such so that I can simply use the dvd copy software and point to the place on the hard drive where the video and audio ts files are and the software does everything by itself. The first dvd i burned this way was so simple and awesome..roxio simply did all the work....all I did was point to the files. It creatred the dvd interactive menus and everything...all i did was burn it and it came out incredible. Sigh....I guess they can't all be that easy!

hehe yah and that would put chickenman out of a job here at the forum lol :)

but unfortunatley life aint that simple but hey at least ya going to learn something at the same time :D

Viper pointed already in the right direction (CM's tutorials); :cool:
but i reached the end with my knowledge here, because i'm the "audio only" man in our team;
get your lessons by reading CM's tuts and don't fear to post your questions in the related rubric; :)
