Backing up PS2 Games on Ricoh MP5125A DVD+R

Hi,

I've just purchased a DMS3 v2 chip for my PS2 Version 4. I have a Ricoh MP5125A DVD+R/RW drive. I want to backup games I own so my son wont ruin them etc.

The question is, whats the best DVD+R media to use in my PS2 v4 ?

I've backed up a movie before that worked on it, but all others have not. The movies all play fine in all other DVD video players tested.

Im worried im going to get the same problem with the game backups.

I've heard that Ricoh G04 dye DVD+R should work?

Also, whats the best program to back them up ? running XP pro.

Help is appreciated.

Going for the best media is a good choice. Ritek G04 and Verbatim are excellent media's. The best program to use would probably be DVD Decryptor or RecordNow Max. Also I'd recommend you getting CD/DVD-R. Don't get +R.

im having a problem backing up one of my games. Its called prince of persia if any of yous have it and have backed it up succesfully. I used dvd decypter and once it got to 67% an error thingy came up. I cant remeber what the error said but i think it had number 86 in it.

I can only use DVD+R on my writer ! do they not work ?

Sorry to break it to you but no, the DVD+R will not work on your ps2. DVD+R can only be read by versions v5+. versions v1-v4 cannot read DVD+R.

Not sure that is 100% correct ? as one of the DVD+R's I made of a film worked ! not had any more that do though, then again only tried a few. Seems to be a bit fussy rather than not working at all ? what do you think ?

Perhaps if I get the right media it will be ok. Anyone else had experience of this ?

Yes but that's a film and not a game. There's a difference.
I thought if it would read a film, it should read a game. I thought the reason a device might not read a DVD is due to the laser not being able to read the light spectrum reflected by particular dye's. If the film worked the player can read the medium (on occasion anyway) so why is a game different ?

Sorry if it sounds like im going on, just interested, and want to make sure before I have to fork out for a -r writer :(

A DVD player can read DVD's right? So how come it can't read ps2 DVD games?

A film is much less complicated than a game. See in a game you actually move around. When you do so it gives commands etc... A movie is just something you watch. You can even play backed up movies on an unmodded sytem.

I hope this helps.

You are right, but the recordings are the same, the data is just different, in a movie its an mpeg2 video file organised into a special directory structure. With a game its a piece of software but it is still written in the same method. Or pressed in the case of an original. The reason you can play backed up movies is because it doesnt looks for a Sony copy protection when viewing a film, hence the need for a mod chip to fool the console in the case of a game. But again, the process and technology for the recording are the same, so with a mod chip a game on a DVD+R should work if a movie on a DVD+R does. Is there some other reason why it might not ?

It's not the modchip that boots the FILM that's on DVD+R, so the modchip has nothing to do with it.

I didn't make the ps2 nor did I make the DVD+R. Sure if you say it should work then try your luck. But the scenario is that your DVD+R game isn't working on your v4 console? am I right?

I don't know much about DVD-/+R's, how they are made, or anything to do with it not booting. All I know is that it doesn't work on the OLD models (v1-v4). So if I find out about your "theory" I'll defintely let you know.

Think we getting our wires crossed here, I didnt say anything about the modchip booting a film, I know it has nothing to do with it. I didnt say my game didnt work either as I have not backed one up yet. What I did say is a film worked, but only one. It was you who told me DVD+R didnt work so I am asking questions before I go to great expense to buy another drive. Perhaps you could point me to where you learned about the v1-v4 thing and I can find out more there. Or anything about adjusting laser skew or anything like that ?

You can do whatever you want. It'd be a good idea to try it anyway before you get a new burner.

Just to confirm can you tell me ur model number? It begins with SCPH.
