Hello.

I am a computer moron so any advice is most welcome.

I have DivX 5.1.1.1031 installed and when I play some avis they restart my ststem. Not all avi s do this but the majority and enough to make me wary of playing any. All advice ideas gratefully tried

thanks.

you getting a hidden BSOD, it would be helpful to disable "Automatic Restart": right click at My Computer > properties > enlarged > start and restoring (i'm not sure about the english terms)
so you will get a BSOD instead of a reboot; in the first three lines of the BSOD the trouble causing driver is named;

BSOD = Blue Screen Of Death

It is a commandline program. Just drop one of the offending AVI's onto the EXE though and it should play or restart your PC.

Could also try VLC as I already suggested. Both are ffmpeg based.

If they work fine, then you pretty much know that the problem is dshow based.
Thanks for your help so fatr Celtic Druid. How do I go about dropping one of the avi's onto EXE, what do you mean by VLC. You really are talking to the computer brain dead here, I am trying to learn this as I go along.
