AVI (XVID) to SVCD Help

Hello folks, I need some serious help. I have been trying to convert a .avi file to SVCD for 4 days, with no luck. I have followed chickenman's tutorial (which seem straight forward) with no luck. This tale is long and drawn out so bare with me. I dl a avi file (the properties I have attached), but at first virtualdub would not allow me to view the file information. I then used virtualdubmod and was allowed. Reading various threads which all are very helpful I was able to attempt to use TMPGEnc to convert the file over but I probably received ever error known to TMPGEnc, including the stop in the middle of encoding without an error message. I changed the environmental setting and increased the direct show priority to 2 and then 3, but no luck. I used a program call cucusoft (demo version) which let me encode 1 minute, but I was advised not to buy the program because customer service is not that good. (1) So I have used DVD2SVCD to try and convert the file. (2) TMPGEnc to try and convert the file. No luck with either. Anyone with a idea of what I am talking about I would appreicate the assistance. Details on my system: Win XP; XP2000+, 80GB HD, 1GB RAM; GeFORCE MX400 Graphics Card.

I have attached my file information from virtualdubmod

Errr, I don't see any file attachments. What build of XviD do you have installed? Because that could be the problem, if it is an older build, then try updating to say Koepi's latest development build.

what's the difference between stable & development(unstable)? What should I get?
Arr... the real difference is stability. The Stable version is ..... and the development versions I find generally are un-......... I dont think you need me to mention which one I'd go for. :D

However, I have found Nic's lates Xvid to be stable and working fine for me. Its at http://nic.dnsalias.com/xvid.html

EazyVCD would have to be the simplest product to use to make SVCD's. It uses TMPGenc also. Get it from www.eazyvcd.tk

Nic's latest build was based on the HEAD branch of the source, same as Koepi's, so if you are going to call one unstable, then the other is to.

That said, Koepi's build contains additional code, some of it bug fixes not found in the CVS and some additional features.

Then again, Nic's build comes with his decoder. Koepi's just the regular CVS decoder.

Both versions are very stable and include many features, bug fixes, etc. over the old stable build.

If you want unstable, try a devapi4 build.

I've experienced the same problems too, tried every app and follwoed every tutorial to the word (up to the point of a crash anyway) but then I tried Cucusoft and it did what it said but for one thing: I loaded a 700mb Xvid/avi file to convert to SVCD and I ended at first with a 6mb Mpeg and then the next time It tried a 9mb mpeg. That time VCD.
Thats the nearest I've got - Anyone know what happened? Can't find any reference to it anywhere.

Thx

Then clearly it didnt work either

My Tute (and I'm sure every other Tiute on the Net) works but only if you have the right Codec installed & available and the AVI is not damaged in any way. I would suggest you check the avi througly with tools like DivFix, DivXRepair & VirtualDUB and change your codec.

Thx for replying CM
From your previous posts and suggestions I've learned to check with Divfix, avicodec, gspot etc and from there d'ld the correct codecs and after further checks with the same programs got a positive result. I'm convinced my fan is faulty and the cpu is too old - I'll get an upgrade. Is a lot of ram important in all this? I've got 384mb.

Thx

Change your fan then, thats the problem, not your CPU. It is slow however, but will still work providing the fan is doing its job. Your RAM is fine in quantity, I'm just questioning its quality. If you have overclocked your system, turn it back to normal.

Or as you suggest, time to upgrade the PC to a newer one.
