Avi (Xvid) to SVCD confusion

Having always used Chickenmans excellent tutorials to convert DVD`s to VCD/SVCD (the man knows his stuff) I thought it it was time to try a divx conversion.

The film is Road to Peredition which is a good quality Xvid , followed the tutorial to the letter and ended up with the two usual mpg files wihout any problems.

Came to burn the mpgs in VCD easy (added chapters, selected SVCD 1.0 in VideoCD Type , etc , etc ) after checking the file VCDeasy informed me that a Mpeg2 file was required for this standard not a Mpeg1 , but did I want to add the file anyway , thinking this must be a small bug in Vcdeasy I added the file and burn`t the disc.
Try`d to play the disc in WinDVD and it played fine , try`d it in my standalone DVD player (Yelo 800 , has played everything thrown at it ) and although it appeared to load the SVCD would`nt play the disc.
Went back and re-cut the disc in VCDeasy using VCD 2.0 as the Video CD type and the disc plays fine in the standalone dvd player.
The question is "have I missed somthing and encoded the Xvid to vcd by mistake or is there a problem with xvids in general"
I have all the codecs correctly installed and the very latest versions of all the required software .

Thanks in advance

You simply converted the Xvid to VCD by mistake.

If your making either VCD's or SVCD using DVD2SVCD, then set up DVD2SVCD (no avi loaded in yet) to all the settings I recommend and anything esle you want to play with, then go to Misc tab and Save Settings, as say AVI2VCD SETTINGS.ini Then do the same for SVCD and save out.

When your about to do a conversion, load in appropriate settings.ini file (Misc tab again) then load in AVI and away you go. That way you cant get it wrong and no need to continually have to set, re-set settings.

Further thoughts

Thanks for the reply , I`ve done a bit more checking , making sure that I had followed your tutorial to the letter and forgot to mention that certain options that the tutorial said would be available were actually greyed out

1. Convert divx3 to divx4 (I put this down to the fact I was encoding an Xvid , however I`ve loaded a Divx 3 to encode an the option is still greyed out)

2.the option in bbMPEG to adjust the CD Overlap is greyed out(also the radio buttons at the top of the bbMPEG option screen are only showing MPEG-1 or VCD as available the rest are greyed out)

3.I can`t seem to find the "sharpen"option in the Frameserver Tab

Thanks in Advance

Possibly solved

Chickenman

When following your guide "to the letter"converting Avi/Divx to SVCD you omit to tell a newbie that in the "Misc"tab , as well as selecting input file type as AVI you must also select output file as MPEG-2!!
I still think your guides are the clearest and best written for people like me and part of the fun is solving problems, but for newbies to this conversion lark your word is gospel and somthing that you might think is obvious is a major stumbling block to the unexperienced.
Keep up the excellent work with both your guides and this forum I can assure you that it is very much appreciated.
