AVI -> VCD with NO AUDIO problem

all masters,

I have tried different programs, spent a whole nite searching on other sites and this site for the problem but none exactly relate to mine, and I am needing your help again.

After the first problem with 2 AVI files I tried (converted) pretty close to a dozen times, I then decided to give me a break to enjoy life a little bit. I played the movies on both PC and TV (around 20' apart) and I got the sound from PC, that solved the problem and I deleted those movies.

But the NO AUDIO problem got stuck in my mind and it bothers me quite a bit, especially when I read ChickenMan mentioned the VirtualDub and NanDub. Well...well.. fixing the AVI, extracting the Audio from AVI then join it later sounds so sweet, so ( ( (( SOUNDY )) ) )

I searched and downloaded the VirtualDUB and NanDub (haven't had time to play with this one yet) and gave VirtualDub a try. After hours of trying and researching I still can't get to no where ...

The problem that VirtualDub runs into that it can't read the AUDIO (it reports something is wrong with Audio) so it can't play nor extracting the Audio to WAV. The small error window flashes so quick that I can't be able to read the whole long report but few words mention "AUDIO" problem.

After you load the vid file are you setting both vid and audio to direct stream? Then go to file and save wav.

Thanks a billion! I just set the Video and Audio you mention above and I am saving the WAV now.

Will use TMPGenc to convert to VCD with external WAV file and go from there. Or if VirtualDub can save to AVI with newer Audio setting then I can give it a try to learn new trick too.

Again, thanks for sharing your experience

:D :D :D :D I just tried the 71MB WAV file saved by VirtualDub and turn out it's a silent audio WAV file ;) BTW, I am testing the WAV file using WinAmp

I forgot to mention that whjen I first ran VirtualDub it reported one or more hacked version of Divx (or something similar to it, codes ?) installed on my system ..

Hmmm.. since I am pretty new to all multimedia and codes stuff, I don't know exactly which codec or Divx I have installed on my system. I do remember reading suggestions between this and Dvdrhelp and followed the suggestions to download and install some freeware or beta codec. Sometime I saw some modified version's with some extra features or stuff like that...

I am 1/2 blind on all this game ;)

updating ...

I have no luck with neither TMPGenc, VirtualDub, NanDub, just followed someone else suggestion to other user I downloaded the VirtualDubMod .. but continuing searching for more tips. I ran into few suggests to use GoldWave to extract the audio which makes sence because GoldWave designed sepcific for Audio so it would be able to read many different setting than Video apps.

Well, got GoldWave installed, loaded the AVI and now I can play it (yeah! it has finally making some noise) and saving the WAV to hard drive now... wish me luck ... I have better post mre report before I glue myself to the AVI/WAV game.

Now, this time GoldWave saves a beautiful big fat 570MB .WAV file from 715MB .AVI file (about 10 times larger than VirtualDub did with the silent WAV). I am testing it with WinAmp and it works...

Now I will leave to play with the movies ... the price I have to pay for some experience costs me almost 2 days with little sleep. And I wouldn't be able to get this far without some tips from you folks.

Thanks!

Update.....

Just finshed one movie and it works!

This is what I have done hoping someone can add more information to share with other members.

1. Since none of the Video programs I tried can read the Audio from AVI file to either convert to VCD with audio, or extracting audio from AVI file (save to .WAV). I have to use an audio editor (never used it before) called GoldWave to extract the audio from AVI file and save as .WAV format (almost 600MB)

2. I tested it with TMPGenc DVD Author (by loading both MPG with no audio and the new .WAV file) and it works *but* it would cost over 1G for both .MPG + .WAV file. So I just played but didn't burn to DVD

3. I then load *both* .MPG I converted before with no audio, and the working .WAV file to TMPGenc, and output as MPEG-1. The newer .MPG with working audio is about same size with the one with no sound (less than 100M difference).

Also, most of the AVI -> MPEG I often end up with larger MPEG (200-300MB larger) file than original AVI file, but the current 2 movies I get smaller .MPG (about 100MB smaller) than original .AVI

... I am converting the 2nd movie and hoping it will work like the 1st one.

The AVI used AC3 audio, you could have used BeSweet to convert directly to mp2 and then just multiplexed with your video.

When you saved it out with VirtualDub, you would have got an AC3 with a WAV header. If you use VDubMod then you can have it demux the audio, which would have given you a regular AC3 stream.

Glad you got it working though.

VCD is 10MB's/min.

Also glad you got it working. I wasn't thinking that the avi had ac3, I automatically thought it was divx audio. You can also use nandub for the ac3 audio. There are many different versions of virtualdub out there and they all serve a good purpose depending on what you want to do.

I never used AC3 but I believe I have seen it and quite a few others from TMPGenc and similar.

The problem I had that VirtualDub and NanDub CAN NOT play the Audio to be recorded. I use the slidebar to display video just fine, but as soon as I click the PLAY then it will report Audio problem.

Oops! I forgot to mention that I am gonna hunt for BeSweet to play with it for future use. I just woke up from testing out the new CPAP machine and trying to recover the enegy from the past 2 days ;)

And thanks for the AC3 (will pay more attention to this) and gotta try BeSweet
