Your capturing the pic to small in size. The 320x240 is even smaller than VCD size of 352x240. Then converting it to SVCD, it needs to be expanded to 480x480, hence the washed out look.

Solution: capture at a larger pic size, at least 480x480

Thanks for the information ,i figured if i laid out exactly how i did it someone would know where i am going wrong.

Hey ChickenMan can you give me your specs for your avi's,i changed my ati setting for avi to 480x480 and the picture was blocky also the movie would take up all my drive space 40 gig.

Can you change the Codec to use for the AVI, instead of uncompressed? If so then use DivX at 1000 or 1200 bps data rate will give you excellent results and will not take up a lot of room on the HD.

i wish i could ati has no place to change codec maybe i will try,to use ulead video studio or dvd maker, never had much luck before with these.i have not bad luck useing ati mpeg 1 at 352x240 ntsc[525] 9.03m/bit/second audio 44.100khz 16 bit stereo, and then useing tmpgenc to convert to svcd, but ithink i can do better with avi for picture quality but am having hard time to get good avi to stay good. Sorry to keep hounding everyone for i am not new to this[no newbie] but do not do it everyday so i forget or lag behind, now winter is here im back into it.

Thank's for Putting up with me.
