.avi/SVCD size - disc spanning survey

I'm fairly new to all this malarky but was just wondering how much people tend to squeeze onto their discs?
I did my first rip (DVD to .avi) and largely thanks to Chickenman it came out perfect. However, this was only a 45min film so i made it 690mb to pretty much fill up a disc (did the audio at 192kbps as well).
I need to do another rip later but it'll be much longer, just wondering how much people usually put in film time on each disc - what does a 1-2hr .avi look like if it's squeezed into 700mb?

From the looks of it SVCD's need about a disc per hour? Is this the same for .avi's?
What are the advantages of ripping to .avi's? It seems like SVCD's would be better quality? Is the relative performance of an .avi better at smaller sizes?
Could someone give me a quick rundown on the relative merits of each format versus each other (i.e. .avi/SVCD/VCD)
Thanks

A very quick rundown

VCD - Equal or a bit better than VHS tape. Normally fits to 2 CD's

SVCD - Very good quality and viewed on an old TV, about the same as a DVD. But generally regarded as about 80% quality of a DVD. Normally 2-3 CD's

AVI (DivX) - Variable from excellent quality to absolute crap quality. Excellent can be 90% of a DVD but only PC playback at the moment. Normally 1 CD

vcd-80mins per 80min cd (700mb)
svcd 45-60 mins
avi- just fill the disc. (maybe split it if over 150mins)

If they are for yourself then choose .avi if u play it only on the pc or svcd if your standalone dvd will play it.

However , "Chickenman Standard"# vcds are excellent and kick the ass of vhs original films.

The thing to remember is garbage in, garbage out.
If you are ripping dvds then no worries.
