avi playback problem

Hope some of you lot can throw me a lifeline, first of all i have just ahd to re-install win2k pro on my puter due to a crash (not related to the problem), my problem is when i playback avi files (divx/xvid) through a media player i can hardly see the picture it's very dark, but in media player if i put the brightness up the pictures fine, but this brightness change is lost whenever i close media player, is the some sort of congif i need to do, i have installed K-LITE codec pack (which has never given me any problems in the past) and also the xvid code but my problem is still here,

any advice/help would be much appreciated.

NONE as a simple answer :)

reason being they are often more HASSLE than they are worth/of use!

install the DIVX bundle and and possibly the AC3 and the XVID codec and any others add when needed using G-SPOT to show the needed codecs and install just those :)

hi folks

tried all of the above still very dark playback on all video types, avi dvd etc..

any more ideas

i only have divx 5.1.1 codec
xvid latest codec
powerdvd
directx 9 (latest version)

any more help very welcome.
