Avi File unsupported or can't open

When I try to load the avi in tmpgenc 2.58 to convert every movie I try to input says"Unable to open or file not supported"Any ideas?

Sounds like you are missing a codec. Download GSPOT and run it against the AVI. See which codecs it needs and what you might be missing.

When I run the files trough GSpot it says there is 2 codecs installed to play...I can Play all the files on my computer & they run fine.It is just when I try convert them in TMPGEnc that it says
"Unable to open file or file not supported"

When converting with TMGPEnc (unless you crank the priority of the directshow reader plugin) a VFW codec is used, where as when you play the file a directshow one is used.

From my recolection in GSpot if the status for the video says installed or whatever then it means you have a VFW codec installed, in which case it should convert fine with TMPGEnc.

I have tried several different encoders.None of them recognize any of the files I have.But all play normally with quick time or the windows media player.Any other help would be appreciated......

@Tech 34 can you tell us what codec is used on the Avi you are trying to convert .....copy and paste the info from G-SPOT when you check the avi with it... or type it in a reply in this thread and we may be able to help you more with the information you provide us with :)

(S) --> AVI Splitter --> Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Decompressor --> (R)
This is the video source after I push render in GSpotIt also says 2 compatible codecs installed.They are..

Microsoft MPEG-4 Video Compressor & WMVideo Decoder DMO

Does this mean I these installed or I need these to be installed.

Can you plaese report what the actual codecs GSPOT has reported rather than "the 2 codecs are installed". What everyone here wants to know is what they actually are.

What codec (and versions if know) have you installed ?

Like I said directshow is not important.

What is really important is the fourCC, in this case MPG4, MP42 or MP43.

I now see that GSpot also reports directshow decoders as having 1 decoder installed, if you want to convert then you are going to need to have a VFW decoder installed such as Microsoft MPEG4 or ffVFW.

Also just noticed that for some reason GSpot doesn't report ffVFW, even though it is capable of decoding, although there would appear to be a bug where Milan thought that the fourcc code for V1 was MP41 when in fact it is MPG4, if works fine if you change the fourCC though.
