AVI File To Fit On DVD

Could anybody help me on a proberbly simple problem?

I have got a 1.58GB Mpeg file and when I put it into my program (Intervideo Creator) to convert it to DVD it says that it is to big to fit on a standard DVD disc.

Is there another program that I can use to shrink this file?

How does the avi fit in?

Any decent software should let you manually enter a bitrate, which unless the source mpg is extremly long you should be able to enter a low enough bitrate to fit.

Depending on the source mpeg specs it may be possible to fit it without re-encoding, at least the video.
