AVI Conversion/Codec

Hi:)

I'm fairly new to converting AVI's to DVD. I'm using DVD2SVCD (CCE) for the conversion and have recently come up against a couple of problems.

My lastest films are split on 2 avi's, the video plays back fine but without the sound. Windows Media Player reports an error downloading the codec.
So, different codec required......this i did, uninstalling the current Xvid codec and replacing with Nimo 5 build 9 (also tried build 8). This time I get great sound (ac3) but the video is blotchy?

Also, when trying to encode, CCE soon crashes. I've noticed that when trying to preview video/still picture, nothing shows with the following message:
"(ACM failed to sugest a compatible PCM format G\Programfiles\DVD2SVCD\temp\preview av's, line 2)"

Other AVI's of one disc play and convert fine (mp3 audio)

Please could someone put me in the right direction
Thanxxx

Well, I sorted out the playback codec problem but still DVD2SVCD refuses to encoded the video. Sound is processed ok but then crashes.

Please help

Uninstall the Nimo pack, causes more problems that it cures. If you want the AC3 Codec from the pack, install THAT ONLY, do NOT install any of its other crap. It causes CCE/Tmpgenc/etc to crash due to codec confusion (they are all Blonde!)

Your 2x avi's most probably have AC3 audio, just check it with GSPOT.

All Blonde :)

One step ahead of you......just installed the audio codec only and it worked a treat. Still however had problems with DVD2SVCD and that I also fixed by installing the latest version and following your avi conversion guide, and again that worked a treat! But, and there's always a but with me...
Having problems with the ac3 audio, maestro refuses to load it "Cannot locate a frame sync word at an expected byte offset" and other audio conversion progs report problems. Sonic Soft Encode' will allow me to load the ac3 (6channel) but ony shows a playing time of 53 minutes, which is the length of the first avi before joining the two with VDub. Could it be the joining of these two avi's that's causing problems with the audio?
I've tried 'direct stream copy 'with Vdub, but the wav plays back distorted.
Tried 'Full processing mode' with vdub and that reports 'no compression could be found'

The mp2, created by DVD2SVCD, will load into Maestro, but the audio sounds flat, compared to the AC3. Can the MP2 be converted back to 6 channel AC3?

The joining of the AVI's can cause that problem, probably 7-8 times out of 10. You just need to convert the AC3 to AC3. You can use AC3 Machine, just make sure you slect all the right settings for the original AC3. But I find there is a neat little util called BeSplit with the BeSpliced GUI. Very small, very quick and easy to use. Just run BeSpliced, then drag the AC3 file onto the small Window, then select Fix File! Soon you will have an AC3 file that will load into Maestro with no problems. Get them from Doom9's download page

:D :D :D :D :D

I've pulled my hair out over this one, you wouldn't believe the time I spent re-encoding the audio. Tried ac3 to ac3 to no avail. There was actually a sync error with the 2nd avi audio.
The BeSpliced GUI is most unusual, just the small picture to which you drag the ac3 file to. A great and fast utility that made it all so easy.

Can't thank you enough CM.
You're my Saviour and my Hero!!

Arr.. gee... shucks.... :D :D :)

Glad to hear its worked out for ya. BeSpliced has indead an unusual interface, but as you said, its small, fast and does FIX the problems of AC3 without having to inputt any settings etc. just drag & drop.
