AVI compression.

Has anyone had any experience of compressing .AVI format files.
I created a video speech with a webcam, lasting 4 mins, have managed to reduce it to 58mb from 400mb, but its still too big, need to get it down to about 8mb.

Loss of resolution would be acceptable, but can find no way of reducing it.

The webcam I use is a Trustcam 320, which doesn’t appear to have any way to capture at a lower resolution.

Any suggestions, on adjusting, or recreating at a lower resolution, with other methods.

Open it in virtualdub.
Select Video, Compression, and select a codec, then configure it at a very low bitrate.
You could use something like DivXMpeg4 Lowmotion, at about 100kbps and that file would be miniscule, but you'll barely be able to watch it, because the quality will be so poor.

I wonder if REAL or WMV would do better?

It should be possible to adjust the size later, same as when converting from DVD to VCD.
I'm surprised it doesn't offer a selection to drop down to QCIF resolution
