AVI => CDR => DVD Player?

Hello, in another forum I read a post by a guy who says he took a DVD-compatible MPG (I'm assuming MPEG-2) and wrote it to a UDF / ISO (mode 2 / XA) disc (created with Nero) which he was able to play in a DVD player almost as if it were a retail DVD.

Is this at all possible? If so could someone please explain?

Thanks. :)

Ugh, man I hope there's another alternative... Only ~15 minutes of footage per CDR? That and the compatibility issues...

depending on what make of DVD player you have some you can burn a plain mpg /mpg2 file as data to a cdr and it will play in the player just fine ....but not all models support this kind of VANILLA/PLAIN mpg format and look for a SVCD or VCD compliant format :)

My standalone player is a YAMADA UMAX 2100 it will play any plain mpg file or mpg2 file on cdr or cdrw without conversion to SVCD/VCD this can be upto 700mb assuming you use a 700mb 80min blank :) check your DVD players manual/specifications ..mine clearly states it will play MPG files no conversion :)

the other alternative would be a quick test burn on a CDRW :) or if yer not bothered about loosing a cdr as they are pretty cheap anyhow ... make a test disk :)

other than buying a dvd player that states it plays MPGs no conversion then there is no way possible of making one work unless its made as a mini dvd :)

Sounds like a miniDVD to me, and yes, 15 minutes sounds about right. I would think you are better off sticking to SVCD, if your player can handle it.

Thanks for your info VIPER_1069!

If I were to burn an MPEG-2 to a CDR, would it need to be in the UDF / ISO (mode 2 / XA) format to do what you describe with your Yamada player? Or some other format?

Also, I'd used TMPGEnc the other night to convert a DVDRip I have from AVI => MPEG-2 and it turned out to be around 4 GB, any suggestions on good ways to trim the size down for MPEG-2?

Thanks aybesea; yeah, my Apex handles SVCD just fine, I was just hoping for some nice tidy solution that would let me plop at least half of an entire ripped movie onto a single CDR.
