AVI 2 DVD problem

I´ve just bought my LiteOn DVD Burner and it seems to work properly.

The problem i met was when i tried to convert an AVI movie into DVD-Video using SonicMyDVD (in order to watch it on my DVDplayer); it just seemed to be TOO LARGE to fit in 4,7Gb DVD!!!!

I wounder why and how to "compress" it into 4,7 DVD
