audio sync probs

hi. i have just joined 2 avi files together with virtualdub mod and the audio sync is fine. after converting to vobs + ifos to burn as dvd, the lip sync is out. how can i correct the problem?

tnx in advance

hi. tnx for reply, celtic druid. avi info as requested:
Audio : 433 MB, 448 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 5 channels, 0x2000 = AC3 DVM, Not checked
Video : 930 MB, 962 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 512*384 (4:3), XVID = XVID Mpeg-4, Supported

i used win dvd creator for conversion, as i usually do. not normally any problems. sync-out seems to be in second half of converted file, but not in avi files, either before or after joining them. seems to be a constant amount. tmpg wont allow me to rip audio from file to try re-sync with mpeg-vcr. have tried to use dvd2svcd without success too.
any advice appreciated.

tnx

Demux the audio using VirtualDubMod, running it through BeSplit if needed.
Demux your video stream from your out of sync mpg with say bbdemux.
Add both streams to authoring app and hopefully all is in sync. Probably should check their lengths match first I guess.

Clearly the problem is occuring at the join and due to the join. Joining AVI's with AC3 audio can be troublesome. The best solution then is to encode each AVI to 1/2 a dvd size (assuming they are both equal length, in time) then when authoring to vob files, link the end of the first to start the second. Check out DVDLabs tute on how to do this (Tute is for SVCD's but same principle applies) http://www.mediachance.com/dvdlab/tutorial/svcd.html

hi. tnx to you both for replies. will give both options a try when i get chance. work probs at moment! ha ha

hi to celtic druid and chickenman. have gone back and re-joined avis. sync is perfect in resulting single file. the problem is definately in the conversion to dvd format. windvd creater has only pal 25 fps and ntsc 23 fps options, not ntsc 29 fps option which is needed here. how can i convert with required fps option? hopefully sync will then be fine.

tnx again in advance

From your post above
"Video : 930 MB, 962 Kbps, 23.976 fps, 512*384 (4:3), XVID = XVID Mpeg-4, Supported"

You need to convert this to 23.976fps, not 29.97. Once encoded, Pulldown should be run to convert it (no encoding done just a rearrange of the headers and pointers) for authoring & playback on NTSC equipment.

hi chickenman. tnx again for reply. agree that encoding is originally 23 .976 ntsc, but thought that changing fps may produce desired result. could you please point me in the direction of what prog to use, which gives me the pulldown option you mention, to change into dvd format. windvd creator doesn't have it as far as i know. should i use windvd creator first then some other prog?
tnx once again

hi cm. much obliged for help and info. will check out link. just to let you know, after trying dvd2svcd and having it fail, tried it again with new joined avi file. couldn't believe it! this time it worked! absolute perfect audio sync and resulting dvd. only did 2 pass. now got to go thro' similar things with a joined avsqe.dat (svcd?) movie. if i need help, would you mind?
best regards,
kevpc
