ATI 9700 mobility driver install problem

I am trying to install the regular ATI catalyst drivers on my laptop (mobility 9700), I usually use the Omega drivers because they boosted performance on my other computer (which has a 9800se). But I have been reading lately that the regular catalyst drivers are better for any models that dont need softmodding to get better performance like my 9800se does. Now here comes the problem, whenever I use the ATI installer it tells me that I need to first install a "standard vga driver". I researched this and tried cleaning my drivers with a program called driver cleaner 3 and still had no luck installing the new drivers. Any ideas on how I might go about installing them? The ATI help page has yet to give me any useful information so I thought I might see if anyone here could help.

Have you applied the "Mobility Modder" - you can't install unmodified cat's on a Mobility?

I generally install by INF, rather than by setup, after finding most "setup" applications to be fussy and unreliable - Windows has a perfectly good and standard way to install/update drivers, setup apps just confuse the issue

The mobility modder worked like a dream , but after experimentation with both sets of drivers, I would recomend sticking to the omega drivers which were yeilding much higher fps and performance. Thanx for your help.
