Athlon XPs and ddr RAM

no it is not absolutely necessary, but it will also deter your memory bandwidth & other processings by around 20-40% (depending on what you are doing). Too big a performance gap for me *plus you will need a motherboard which supports the athlon XP processor with PC-133 RAM & most of those aren't very good.

i have a Athlon TB 1.4Ghz 266Mhz FSB and 768Mb (3x256Mb)PC2100 DDR Registered Crucial.
I have to say it has speeded things up.
I do alot of Audio stuff and ive noticed that alot of it goes straight into the ram therefore increasing access time. I also noticed that when i burn a CD, all of the data goes into the ram which acts as a Huge buffer.
If you work with big files then i would say that it is faster, atleast that is what ive found.
It also helps to have a 7200rpm HDD

yup agree with the statements above ;).......
the pc133 ram and the xp cpu will work together providing your mobo supports the 266 fsb xp with pc133 ram, one such mobo is the Chaintech 7AJA2/100 (with the latest bios can go upto a 2000xp)...not a bad mobo...

basically your system would not be running at it's full potential.....it all depends on your situation, do you have a mobo that will accept the xp and pc133???.....or are you just thinking of an upgrade???

I would certainly not use anything but DDR if starting from scratch - but there's no reason, other than often weak Athlon XP compatibility of SDRAM-only motherboards, not to use an XP with SDRAM.

The memmory bus perfermance will certainly be compromised, as will AGP 4x mode for the same reason.

PS. I have a Thunderbird 1200 on a 200FSB SDRAM board - and it sure ain't as fast as it ought to be ... the price I paid for being too reliant on ISA slots!

sabwafare2001 -- you live in Texas, and the US has just about the cheapest memory prices to be found! 256 pc2100 might only set you back about $50 (though prices are going up). Try the price offered at Crucial.c*m or have a look at pricewatch.c*m
