AMD introduced the AMD64 platform some time ago at the server level first, with the Operton platform, and then into the consumer desktop space with the Athlon 64 and Athlon 64 FX. AMD's CPU configurations favour instructions-per-clock over pure clock speed and hence have a large, even more so than their Athlon XP series, clock speed deficits to equivalent Intel CPU's. Not only did AMD decide the performance per clock was the way to go, but they also decided to include 64-bit instruction and addressing capabilities, something that Intel shunned, exclaiming this was wasting die space for something that will not be used due to lack of software.
Today AMD are announcing an update to their 64-bit consumer oriented processors in the form of the Socket 939 platform. Before we go on to look at a little more behind Socket 939 we'll take a quick look at what the Athlon 64 platform brings.
