Aspi Drivers

After finally getting Nero to work Ok I need a bit more knowledge with regards to the aspi drivers. Up until now I have always installed the aspi drivers from Adaptec. I read that Nero has its own aspi driver (wnaspi32.dll). Does this mean that I do not need to insall any other aspi drivers. Am using Matshita DVD Ram SW 9581.

Nero does not need Adaptec ASPI, but other apps do (even apps like PowerDVD work much better when they use ASPI instead of SPTI).

as scarecrow said, it's a good thing to have the adecuate ASPI layers properly installed. Most people agree you would be better off with version 4.60 instead of the newer versions.

Use 'ASPI check' to know what you have or haven't and 'Force ASPI' or something similar to properly install your ASPI 4.60 set

just do a simple search in this forum or with Google to get them if you need them, like:

GX600 Best set of aspi drivers are v4.60 on all your windows..
As scarecrow pointed out there are apps that will need them.:)

Thanks. I have already all the aspi files but after having a lot of burning problems and reinstalling windows Nero now works OK. What I wondered was whether Adaptecs aspi drivers could cause any problems with Nero.

ASPI layer does not create any issues with Nero, or "almost" every other mastering application. Most ASPI problems come out of the new sensing code which was introduced in ASPI versions 4.7X...
It is necessary for some modern SCSI peripherals (LVD harddisks mainly), but create issues for normal ATAPI and USB devices (the latter in particular). If you don't have any SCSI harddisks you can safely use the old 4.60.XX ASPI layer, which works fine in every known MS-OS and does not conflict with most (if not all) known device drivers.

Yeah ... in my experience its usually OTHER burn programs/tools that use the CDROM drive and are mixed on the same hard drive as each other ...that install "ROGUE" drivers that overwrite the aspi layer or corrupt it !! :( and at least 90% of the time i would say it was EASY CD CREMATOR as the culprit as this causes no end of troubles for most burner users :( ... total elimination of this program or simply not install it solves most problems ! :)

(nope im not totally biased against it ive used it myself and others use it here......BUT...being on this board for a long time i've seen people come and go with the same problems! and most of us here loath that program!)

Rule of the thumb is use what you know works and only test other stuff if your are confident of fixing it afterwards ....spose the additional of ROLLBACK points in X.P. is a must have feature here when testing new stuff .... in 98/98SE you can get "GO-BACK" that does pretty much the same thing :)

sorry for a long winded reply but thought i would add this to the thread as it pretty much covers the issue of how aspi layers often get ruined by simply bad programming :(

Creator does alter the ASPI layer- latest versions install 4.7X without notice. The ral nightmare is the uninstalling part of it...
Still Creator is not the worst program out there- just POOR software with a lot of useless and sort-of-working fireworks.
I'm biased against system restore... under ME it was just crap, sometimes working sometimes not and offering a big performance handicap. Gladly enough it can be disabled with third party software.
Under XP the performance handicap is minimal, and most times it works (not always). But I cannot see any good reason devoting several HD gigabutes to something that might work, since Ghost and True Image work 99,5% of the times, and the snapshots can be stored to cheapo CD/DVD media instead of my HD.
I won't like to comment on "Go Back", porn is not allowed in this forum! :p

Thanks very much for the replies. I had already found the problems with Easy CD Creator. I had been using it for sometime and it worked fine. My problems started when I bought a DVD writer and started to look at other programmes.
