Are all DVD burners created equal?

I know that some CD burners are more adept at reading certain CD encryptions than other burners. Does the same thing apply to DVD burners? I have never had a problem ripping a DVD with my Lite-On burner, but my friend purchased an EMPREX DVD burner from Fry`s Electronics, and has encountered several ripping problems, apparenty encryption related. We both use the latest version of DVD Decrypter, so the primary difference appears to be the burner. Anybody have any thoughts on this subject?

No they are not all the same, however they should all handle encryption fine.. I mean how are you supposed to play your originals otherwise?

some drives may be better at reading less-than-perfect discs than others. lite-ons are known to have very good reading capabilities. however, if he's having problems on all dvds, then there's probably some kind of problem/malfunction with the drive (rather than any inherent inabilities).

Actually he`s only had trouble with a few DVDs. Specifically, the movies "From Hell" and "Saturday Night Fever". All of his other movies have ripped flawlessly. Since I haven`t attempted to rip either of those 2 movies, I can`t rule out the possibility of some unique characteristic of the DVDs themselves.

http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Hardware/All.asp - I hate to send you to a somewhere with a rival forum ;) but they do quite a few drive tests.

The results of those tests are telling - MANY drives have a problem with the second layer of the dual layer test DVD, MOST drives are poor at writing protections, and many are poor at handling the degraded audio CD.
The story on protected audio ripping is also extremly variable.
