Another ms story

Well,i installed xp and wanted to install sp2,i did and since i need a lots(unlimited)connection for bittorent and dc++ i aplyed that patch to change the # connections as 10 is by default,so it would take me to christmas to get few mp3s..lol..
Anyway when you install new os usually you install lots of software..
So,suddenly came message that some system files are replaced and i need a xp-sp2 disk???I putted my original cd-windows xp oem which came with my pc with original windows serial and message came to put original xp-sp2 cd-which i dont have....
so i dismissed that message, rebooted and nothing came out-DONE-
Ok i said, must have been some worm wirus-who knows, spewcially as i didnt even install yet my fsecure..
So i install windows again..sp2 too, fsecure and sygate firewall, applyed patch for connections, tons of other software..bla bla bla..
Same thing-Same message..
So im going third day -third time...i said if i get this message gonna install wmware again
Ok,so xp and sp2 again,applyed patch only-and message come..
I reversed the patch to 10 connection-default and message is gone....
So guys..
Do not install sp2 if you need more then 10 connections...or let me know how you did it couse i asked here about sp2 and nobody said nothing about it-this..
and i think its a pretty nasty stuff from microsoft
Anyway the patch is atteched so you can check out..
If the message comes-DO NOT REBOOT__
Just go back to 10 connections-otherwise youll have to reinstall os :D

I tried that patch when SP2 first came out, pc worked fine for a day or two, then i left shareaza runnin overnight gettin a couple of things, when i got up & checked it next day i had a blue stop screen, tried rebooting & last good config to no avail, tryin to reinstall a image made with true image always failed, took me 2 days to get it working again, so i doubt i try that patch again.

It's better to stick with the SP2 tcpip.sys driver as it doesnt really slow down P2P that much, the start of a download can be slow, but it quickly speeds up in my tests :)

Plus runnin some strange patch on a important sys file is never recommended, even tho this lvlord guy might seem legit :)

BaNzI :D

wow..i really having hard time to belive that 10 connections is enough for dc++ and bittorent..
As you say its much safer to run those original files..but still...
I think ms did this on purpose..not becouse patch was poorly made..
Anyway..i think im done with sp2 until somebody finds a good way to avoid this problem

Guys you need to make a new XP cd with SP2 applied so you can really screw "F" things up. :p:rolleyes:
Just kidding. I've done a few clean installs with SP2 on the cd without any problems (and no it wasn't any of my pc's) :) but they don't use p2p so I couldn't tell you about that. They do use fsecure and a cable router. Which I found had no problem with connecting to the internet or d/l Mozilla. :)
So you may want to give a new cd a shot.:)

its not problem in a new cd..problem is that when you change the number of connections from 10 to unlimited-thats when the disaster strikes :D

Already have a slipstreamed XP SP2 cd bud, all i know is afer using that tcpip patch, my perfectly tweaked & working install started blue screening all over the place, mostly just as desktop was loading, so i not tried it since :)

Agree that the best way to install SP2 is to slipstream it, most probs seem to come from installin it on a working setup of XP.

@Zver, i dont know much about DC++ as i have never used it, i use Shareaza as it saves havin multiple progs installed :)

BaNzI :D

I used shareaza so i can have edonkey and bitorent on same aplication..but for me edonkey and azerous(bitcomet before)do much better job-download is much faster-idea is good to use one proggy for few things-but on my pc didnt work good, specially it was using cpu like crazy

first: i would like to say: don't install SP2
2nd is: if you ignore my point above, then deactivate Windows' system file protection named SFC (left clik at desctop > hit F1 > search for sfc.exe); so you won't get that message anymore;
as third: use XP-AntiSpy instead of a nasty patch; :D

I updated my winxp to sp2 a while ago and set the tcp/ip to 50 connections using the then latest evid patch and have never had problems with either ed2k or bt connections, no error messages.

Here azureus exits after some 24 hours of downloading till the time I patched tcpip.sys. The log indicates that it's a system problem, but since I use CVS builds of Azureus the problem might not be the patch. Tried both JRE 1.4.2_05 and JRE 1.5.0- the latter seems behaving faster and better, but the web UI doesn't work (yet) with 1.5.0
And anyway, without the patch Azureus can run for days without problems.
