CHIP FIRM AMD confirmed our earlier story that reported systems using Athlon MPs are packing up because of problems with the fans.

See Dud fans cause trouble for Athlon MP machines.

An AMD representative said the problem applies to Athlon MP 2100s and below shipped between November 2001 and August 2002.

The firm said these shipped with a specific type of fan made by Dynatron in its "processor in a box" package which caused the problem.

The high failure rate, however, only applies to certain configurations, notably cluster server apps in racks, and doesn't appear to affect pedestal systems.

AMD said there are about 24 customers around the world who are experiencing problems. The AMD rep said that it is working with customers to fix the problems, including alerting those installations who haven't encountered the problem themselves as yet.
