Okay, so the morning paper comes through the door and I start to read through it whilst drinking my much needed cup of strong
coffee. The usual crap falls out of the paper, leaflets, daft scratch off cards, you know the sort of thing but also to end up in my lap with all the other junk was the Curry's leaflet, so I start to have a look through it.
Curry's for anyone unsure is a chain of stores in the U.K. ...your average electrical consumer shop, limited range and high prices are the norm but they sometimes have a bargain or two.
Anyway...stopping at the computer pages, I noticed a spindle of what was obviously blank CD's. It was a short spindle so I knew at a glance it was a 25 pack. The normal price for this, £24.99 but it was on sale for £12.49.
I thought "£12.49 for 25 CD's, bloody hell, what a rip off" .....as I get a spindle of 50 blanks for just over £13, 700Mb x24 speed (good quality as they have never given me any bother and I burn them at x40 all the time without errors).
Then I noticed in the text it said they were 'CDRW' blanks. "Explains the higher price" I thought to myself, "never seen them on a spindle though, normally boxed with jewel cases"
Then I noticed the speed '1x - 24x' ....."No way, these have got to be normal CD-r disks, not x24 CDRW, the price is way too low". I know how much I pay for my lowely x4 CDRW's and these were meant to be x24, for the eqivalent of 2 for a £.
"They've screwed up" I thought and on closer inspection of the image along side the text, they were indeed a spindle of 25 blank CDr's....expensive ones at that price.
So I called Curry's and explained this, just being a good citizen. The lady at the other end sounded as if she would have had difficulty turning a computer on, never mind burning a CD, so I asked for their customer services number. I gave them a call and explained it all again, left my phone number and said I just thought you might want to know. The guy said he would look into it and give me a call back and I would probably get the CDRW's at the lower price, of £12.49. So I said that would be great but you don't do x24 CDRW disks. He pondered for a bit and said he would call me back.
About an hour later, in a moment of weakness when I wasn't online (shame on me I know!!), the phone rings and it's Mr. Customer Services Guy, telling me a big thank you for pointing that out and they will be sorting out a disclaimer for all the stores running the promotion (to avoid more pests like me calling them I guess) and I can have the x24 speed CDRW disks for the price they stated in the leaflet. I again explained that Curry's don't have x24 speed CDRW disks but I'll check what they do have and have some of them instead.
After a quick look on their web site, I found this:
PACKARD BELL 10 PACK CDRW
PACKARD BELL CDRW 80 MIN
Currys Price
£14.99
Features
— 700mb 1-10x
— Re-Writable Disk
— Standard Jewel Case
These were the fastest, largest capacity (700Mb), most expensive ones they had.
Just the job I thought. I called my local store to find out how many of these they are in stock.
"We have one box...oh hold on, make that two boxes, how many do you need?" says the shop assistant.
"I'll take them all thanks and will be in later on this afternoon to pick them up a the bargain price of...." and I go onto to tell my tale of what Customer Services Guy said.
Anyway, they weren't too happy at the store, as if I was stealing the damn things or making them pay for the goods themselves but I ended up with 20 CDRW's for £10 instead of £30. Not a bad deal and all for the sake of one little "W" that was added to the end of "CDR" in the sales leaflet........nice to get one over on them for a change.
Thanks for reading.
