Advice Please

Just wanna say thanks for the tutorial, i have just ripped Planet Of The Apes and very Pleased with the results.

I have a Widescreen TV, and selected 16:9 as my ratio, but when i play the film i have thicker than normal black borders at top and bottom which i cannot remove with the TV settings control. Would selecting 4:3 give me a full screen picture on a widescreen TV?

Also on the tutorial on step 3, when you run DVD2AVI, do you have to "Press F5" to make the movie play or is that just to check the quality, as i left it playing for the full length of the film, being a newbie and not sure what to do

Finally :D on the tutorial again, it says SVCD is trial version only. Is this part of the tutorial ok to follow, or do you need to test it some more.

Many thanks for help.

Ok don't select the ratio by what your TV is, but from what the DVD is. If the DVD comes in 16:9 then encode it as such, if it is 4:3 then encode it as such.
*as a newbie just keep the ratios as they are. Once you get better, you can fool around with cutting/cropping the image to better suit your 16:9 ratio (by cutting out the black borders), however I see that as just more of a headache*

When you press "F5" in DVD2AVI, it's so you can check the aspect ratio of your movie (not quality) & FPS. You don't have to let it play the whole thing =), just check the info that was mentioned in the tutorial.

the SVCD in TMPGEnc is a trial by default. Am not sure if it will allow you do do a full movie or part of it, or if it just expires your use of the SVCD capacity after 15 days or whatever. There is a patch for it though =) on main site but be aware that not all DVD players can play SVCDs. Make sure it is capable first.

Good luck.

download the current "plus" release of tmpg from the mainpage. it is quite easy to keep the aspect ratio if you know how.

as sp said first check the aspect ration in dvd2avi. after ripping the sound file go to tmpg, choose your format and load the two files. change the source aspect ratio to that seen in dvd2avi. the only thing i'm changing to get the best quality and the correct aspect ratio is the "video\motion search precision\highest quality"
and Advanced\video arrange method\full screen. do not use "full screen (keep aspect ratio 1/2)" this will output a correct raion only on your compy but not on a standalone player. then you can also adapt the "bitrate" in order to fit a certain amount of cds but don't go belo 2000kbit/s.

4 days ago i did this way planet of the apes with a perfect aspect ratio, measured by ruler :)

have fun.

btw i got still some probs with the aspect ratio if converting from divix to svcd. but i'm on it m8.
