adsl problem - connection fails

Hi, Please help !

I have ADSL installed and recently find that while I am on-line and downloading from either imesh or kazaa or even signed into msn messenger 6 I find that i get "cut off". I then have to re-start my computer to get back on-line and continue my download. One thing that puzzles me is that recenlty a message keeps coming up saying "You have been signed out of .NET messenger because you are signed in at another location".

ANY suggestions would be much appreciated.

Dave

Questions- Do you have a firewall? It will let you know what other programs want to get online. What other programs come on at startup? Go to start, run, and enter (msconfig), and choose the startup tap to find out what other programs might be starting that also try to connect to the internet. Do you log on automatically or manually? If it's auto then something else might be logging on too.

adsl problems

Hi Blane, Thanks for reply .... in answer to your questions I use Norton Firewall. Not sure what you mean about me logging on auto or manual though. I looked as msconfig in run and quite a few things are on there. Sorry for sounding a bit vague about all of this but I am quite new to computers but know enough about the basics. It seems that sometimes once I have been into either kazaa or imesh not long after it seems to disconnect, ie msn messenger 6. Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks, Dave

Logging onto the internet do you manually put in a password. On some systems as soon as a internet connection is detected it logs on. Are there any programs in your startup that look like they would connect to the internet. If so maybe some of these programs are connecting to the internet too without your permission.

connection fails adsl

Hi Blane, Yes, I do have to sign into my system - running windows xp pro by the way, but things like msn messenger and imesh are set to log on on start up. Where do I find on my comp where the set-ups are for what does and does not start up automatically when I log on. I think it might be a case of going thro it and seeing what might be causing it, although still seems a puzzle to me. Many thanks for your time and sugeestions in trying to sort this, much appreciated as would any further ideas,

Thanks, Dave

ps - my actual adsl/modem appears to always be connected when I check, the problems lies with the non-connection to mns messenger, imesh and kazaa, all seem to go offline at the same time. I did check my norton firewall but only messenger is inciuded on the list as allowed ? (If this info might help further)

Go into each programs options and set them not to come on at startup or if that doesn't work you can go back to the msconfig and shut them down from there so they won't come on at startup.
