Need some advise.
Current system -generic cd-rom [master] conected to Plextor 16x burner[slave]...same ide 2
2 x 40 gig HD's master and slave ...same ide 1.

Now i have purchased the pioneer dvd burner and will ditch the cd-rom.

my thoughts on install:
ide1 = 40 gig hd master..... plextor cdr slave

ide 2 = dvd burner master....40 gig hd slave

Is this the way to hook this baby up??????

You'd be better off putting both hard drives on the same
IDE channel. Putting an optical drive(CDROM or burner)
on the same channel as a hard drive will slow down your
hard drive performance.

[ THEASE are the VARIOUS suggestions i have recieved. NOW ,I'm really confused.
As you can see, there's alot of different and even oposite opinions ]



1.)If it were me, I'd take 2nd drive off ide 1 and replace it with CDrom
put DVD burner as Master on ide2 along with 2nd hard drive as slave
two cd's\dvd's don't get on very well on the same channel if you're copying from one to the other.

2.)You'd be better off putting both hard drives on the same
IDE channel. Putting an optical drive(CDROM or burner)
on the same channel as a hard drive will slow down your
hard drive performance.
3.)Depending on how much harddrive to harddrive or cdr to dvd burner copying you do I would tend to put the harddrives on one channel and the recorders on the other. That used to be the general rule because a slow IDE device would slow down any other device on the same channel. I'm not sure it always is the case now and recording devices have come out that are ATA/66, not just ATA/33.

I think my major concern would be the consideration of having my primary source drive on a different channel than my primary recording drive. IDE still is not very good about reading and writing on the same channel.
4.)Personally, I'd put the second HD in the master slot, but it's up to you...whatever works.
5.)you should never put a hdd on the same cable as a cdrom of any type. put the dvd rom as master on the same ide as the cdrw (slave)
As you can see , I've recieved many ideas on whats right.And I thank all that replied.
Now all I need to know is which way is right?????????

It depends on what's most important to you. If being able
to copy disc to disc is most important, then by all means put
each burner on its own channel. If faster hard drive access
important, put the both burners
on one channel, and your hard drives on the other. There's
going to have to be some kind of trade-off.
You should also check the manual for both burners to see
if they make any recommendations as to whether or not a
drive should be jumpered as master or slave. Some burners
will get finicky if they're not set to master on the channel.
Typically, the access times for optical drives is slower
than hard drives, and putting a burner on the same channel
as a hard drive will cause an overall slowdown in that channel.
I'd say, pick a configuration, and play with it a while, do what
you wanto to do with. If you don't like the way it's working,
change it!

... yeah ... if you put HD & any one CD/DVD/drive in a same chanel, the performance of your HD will fall, because there aren't CD/DVD drives to work besides ATA2 (33mb/s)... That is right ... Nowadays, you know, HDs IDE work in up to 133 mb/s.... I think that a good alternative for you, would be to install an RAID card and to put two HDs in her, leaving the cotroller IDE onboard free for the CD/DVD/RW ...

Thanks for all the replys folks....

I think a mobo with 4 ide channels would be
the answer. My msi board with intergrated raid
sux. Could go ata/card and pick up extra master's.

If you are thinking about a new motherboard I can highly recommend the Abit NV7-133R.

It has 4 IDE channels, brilliant on-board sound and also USB 2.0. It might not be as overclockable as a VIA motherboard but it is pretty quick and with the latest BIOS works flawlessly with the DVR 104 and it is very stable.

Currently I have 2 hard drives (not RAID), 3 CD/DVD drives and a LS120 drive all working quite happily together.
