A very strange thing happened after Q329115

Very strange, after downloading and installing critical update Q329115 my computer on Windows 2000 refused to shutdown or restart for over a minute. I was sat there looking at the "Windows is restarting" notice and then suddenly it would go and after all my troubles the other day I began to wander if I was going potty. (See my posting in the Windows 2000 section)

Because so little new stuff is installed on this machine it was easy to find out what had caused it. I uninstalled Q329115 and it cured the reboot hang, put it in again and the same thing happened.

Has anybody else had this happen?

This is the Q329115 spiel from Microsoft

This update resolves the "Certificate Validation Flaw Could Enable Identity Spoofing" vulnerability in Windows 2000. Download now to prevent an attacker from attempting identity spoofing using certificates.

After the release of SP3, I cloned my PC before installing any software and then timed the boot process. After adding all the critical updates from M$ the boot time doubled and shutdown (which had been almost instant) increased to nearly 2 minutes.

The increased boot time was a pain as was the speed decrease when running some apps (mostly LAN based stuff). Shutdown time isn't that important to me - if I'm shutting down the PC I don't need anymore and therefore just walk away ;)

I now only install "security" related updates but I make sure I keep a clone of the PC before I do this - I guess even M$ can't write bugfixes without bugs ;)

Oldy

Thanks for your input Oldy, I'm just glad that I'm not the only poor mug that has noticed this.
If it was just the shutdown delay, like you I wouldn't mind but if I want/have to reboot then I don't want to be waiting and waiting for the thing to respond.
I don't think that the ("Certificate Validation Flaw Could Enable Identity Spoofing") or the lack of it will bother me.

Thanks ponzan, I'm just glad that I'm not alone.

I thought I was before I posted, none of my friends on 2000 had
any shutdown problems and I had no idea that updating with so called critical updates would cause such a worry.

I'm leaving my 2000 without the critical bugs!
