got a sony dru 530A dvd burner, but was not able to play any of the copies on other table top machines.
After making some "costers" I called Sony..they said that the burner will not interface with 98..need 2000 or xp. True..but it make beautiful cd's? Sony said that was imposssibe due to that 98 did not have the drivers.
Also having a p3 450 was not powerful enough..said I needed 800?

If all this is true, options??...is there a burner that will work with what I have without having to invest a lot of dough to upgrade?
Is Sony really telling the truth..thanks..Jay

i would say its more of an issue with the drive formatting of fat32 clusters and not ntfs clusters which is more of a problem when it comes to dvd images as fat32 does not support 4 gb file sizes that dvds often use ....a lot of programs get around this by splitting the vobs/files into more easy to work with parts of 1 gb as for drivers ?!

there is no specific drivers needed as its an IDE device you may just need to install aspi with force aspi (search forum for "force aspi" no quotes )

then follow the guides for using DVD DECRYPTER and DVD SHRINK as these split files into 1gb chunks to use on a fat32 system you may need to make it into an iso in shrink and burn with decrypter using iso mode :)

if you get stuck please ask more questions :)

THERE ARE other 98 and 98se users out there WITH dvd burners that use them with some success :)

Declaring particular requirements is often a cop-out to avoid awkward support calls.

The FAT32 filesize limit can be a problem for DVD-size ISO's or other disk image formats, or any individual file approaching that size.
Win98 can lock you out of using later software - some latest versions are 2k/XP only. others still support Win98SE.

A lower spec CPU will mostly lead to any DVD encoding tasks taking a VERY VERY long time, instead of just a very long time (or a long time, with the latest CPU's) - any encoder that is faster than would be expected, is probably compromising on quality.

The obvious question... search forum for ASPI, since the 4.70 and later Adaptec ASPI is troublesome compared to the 4.60 versions.

If you're using the "Intel Application Accelerator" IDE drivers, they tend to be problematic for writing.

To be short, we do not believe that Sony told you that your drive doesn't work under Windows 98 because simply this does not apply. The software which came with it might not work though, partially or totally.

I have a Sony DRU 530A also, and have XP. I am having trouble getting a slideshow to burn on a DVD. I used the Sonic myDVD software the first couple of times to do it, and it worked great, but now want to do more than the Sonic can do. I tried three times to get ProShow Gold to burn, says it worked but then it wouldnt play. Now I am trying Arcsoft DVD slideshow. This is exactly what I was looking for, am hoping it will burn. Is there a site that shows software/hardware compatibility? I am getting tired of wasting DVD's.
Thanks for any suggestions
Sharon
