Where will this end.

CAV and 24x rewriting sounds nice, 52x writing isn't much faster than a 40x or 48x burner
but the 2MB buffer could be left out and almost nothing would change:
when burning at 52x these 2MB buffer hold for 0.25 seconds. that's almost like no buffer.
(i know there is always some kind of buffer underrun protection but i wouldn't like it when it stops burning all the time when i'm only loading a small program)
FortiTude

p.s: i think somthing like 8 MB for my 24x yamaha are appropriate (take 2 sec to empty)
--> a 48x or 52x should have at least buffer for 1, or better 2 seconds writing at full speed

keep at it "Ultima Electronics" me ana a few other plex owners who read the info about the posibilitys of a 72x speed burner int hte not so distant future lol but will it be worth it lol !? put the disk in and it pops out burnt as soon s the drawers closed !! lol!?

do we really need more than say 40x speed for us average users !? are we that in a hurry to get data burnt !? lol

one problem is that there aint much media out there capable of that sorta 52x speed capabilitys lol people find it hard enuff co come across 32x speed media let alone 52 lol !! :D

Kenwood

I know that Kenwood used to produce a CD drive that would read at x72, so a burner of the same speed is possible.
Mind you at that speed, the smallest of hair line cracks in your CD and boy is that sucker gonna fly apart.....goodbye CD drive!!!

I very much doubt as it stands that the speed will get that much faster, as the CD itself is just not designed to be whipped round at such an rpm. I guess for burning a full CD a dual laser could be used but for things to get faster a change in the way the data is written has to be invented, as you can't just keep spinning the disc faster and faster.

....DreeM :)

I have an LG 52x24x52 that I recently Installed 2 mb Buffer.
Before that I had a Samsung 48x24x48 8mb Buffer that died a a death after a couple of months.

I have tried 2 of these Samsung Drives and Both have died after burning 400 or so Cd's

As for the LG I cant find media that burns @ 52 so I am using 48x Media.
Burns pretty good but the 2mb buffer just isnt anywhere good enough, Average burn speed seems to be around 40x

The Kenwood used a triple beam scheme to achieve 72X, which was proven erratic. This Kenwood produced plenty of read errors without adequate correction information- no wonder than the company stopped the drive production.

I happen to still have one of those kenwood 72x cd-rom drives. It just never really worked right. I didn't get too many read errors, it was simply just too damn slow at reading. I only got it to read cd's faster on my cd to cd burns. 72x my ass. So it's been packed up in a box on top of the closet for 2 years now.

Actualy it didn´t had any errors the real BIG problem was that after 2 to 3 monts of use the drives were dead, I have changed a unit from Kenwood (ucr-421 I think it was the model) at least 5 times in a year, at least in my case the drive handled audio extraction up to 54x.

I still have the last unit they returned to me but I never took it out of the box.

Isnt Lite-On also supposed to come out with a 52x24x52 drive?
Here they are already in the market. Also if you don´t care about warranty you can turn your ltr-48246s to ltr-52246s by replacing the firmware using mtkflash.

weboneando changed your drive about 5 times! I would give up after the second..:D and your not wrong in not taking the last one out of it's box. ps. hope you did not have to pay for shipping each time.
The post by PlaiBoi about the Lite-on was from July 2003 and yes they have been around for some time now...:)

Actualy the local distributor had to change it, because the laws in here they are obligated for a year to respond with no cost to the costumer.

Thats for sure....:D :D ..
I need something strong to drink this tea (Camomile Honey and Vanilla) I'm drinking not helping matters...
:D 2002 Sorry

ps. I've reset the clock on the PC...:D :D

I had the feeling that these speeds would have to taper off at some point or either change the technology altogether.

I love speed just as much as the next guy, but I'm completely happy to burn audio at 16x max and to burn other data/images at 20 something.

Also, I kind of beleive that Forti is correct. The buffer size needs increasing if one really wants to burn at super high speed and open up msn messenger or winamp (or whatever) at the same time.
