4 Cores in 1, Conroe E6600, 8MB, Kentsfield

Wow! - mind you, it seems that it's two dual core dies "glued together", maybe the final release will actually be a true quad core. They'd never get away with that on a P4, it would fry eggs!

Must admit, I'm not even 100% convinced by dual core. I try to use multithread tweaks on my hyperthreading CPU (two logical cores, with a lot of components shared), and don't find that many!

If X86 CPUs are going to spread wider (multicore) rather than faster, a lot of software redevelopment is going to be needed before it offers anything more than better multitasking. There's enough junk going on in the background to soak up a bit of spare capacity in a dual, but the workload needs to be tuned to fill a quad, unless the task can divide itself.
