I. INTRO
Q. How do I make a 1:1 copy?
A. You don't. You want 1:1, buy another original. Depending on what burner you have you can make a copy that'll work without other background soft running or one that needs emulation BUT you can't make 1:1.
Q. What burner do I need?
A. Any 2 sheep burner can make a working non-emu copy, a 1 sheep burner often, a 0 sheep burner only rarely. Most burners can make a working emu copy though.
Q. How do I know how many sheep my burner has?
A. If it's a 24x+ Lite-on or a 32x+ Asus, it's 2 sheep. Otherwise check the EFM column for supported writers at CloneCD's website.
II. MAKING A NON-EMU COPY
Q. What soft should I use?
A. If you've got a 2 sheep burner, either-
a) alcohol; or
b) make an image with discdump or clonecd with cue and burn the image with fireburner.
Any other cloning soft might work and might not. Only other one worth trying is discjuggler; doesn't always work but if it does, it's the nearest you can get to a 1:1.
If you've got a 0 or 1 sheep burner, alcohol.
Q. How do I use that soft?
A. Alcohol - Insert cd to be copied into reader and click on Copy Wizard. Select your reader as CD/DVD Device and SafeDisc 2 as Datatype and then click Next. Just accept the default for image name at the next screen and click Next. At the next screen, select your burner as CD/DVD Recorder (if it's the same as your reader you'll be prompted to insert a blank cdr/w when reading finished), uncheck Bypass EFM Error if you've got a 2 sheep burner but leave it checked if you've got a 0 or 1 sheep burner, and check Delete image file after recording unless you want to keep it for some reason. Otherwise the defaults are ok, so you can then click Start.
Discdump - First make sure you've got aspi 4.60 installed and working and you use an ide drive as your reader since ddump only works sometimes with aspi 4.7x and almost never with scsi roms. Then insert the cd to be copied into your reader and start the frontend. Select your reader and Safedisc as the dumping method and click on Start disc dump. Then choose a name for the image files and where you want them kept on your hard drive. Don't use any extension for the file name as the extensions will be created by ddump. Then click on Save and ddump will start. When it's finished, it will have created 3 files with the name you chose and with the extensions .cue (control file), .iso (image file) and .log (error log file).
CloneCD - Insert the cd to be copied into your reader and click on the Read to Image file button. At the first screen, select your reader and click Next. At the next screen select or create a profile where Fast Error Skip either is on or is set to automatic. Default Game CD and Protected PC Game profiles are ok but you can make a custom profile that will be a bit faster if you want. Then click Next. At the next screen choose a name and location for the image files and check Create "Cue-Sheet". Then click OK and ccd will start.
Fireburner (to burn the ddump or ccd image) - After starting up fireburner and putting a blank cdr/w into your burner click on File and then Import Tracks from Cuesheet. Locate the .cue file and click Open. Then click OK on the status window. Then click on Configuration and then Device Options. On the Device Configuration sheet, select your writer and check Disc-at-once 16 or Disc-at-once 96, Close CD, Eject when finished and Enable BURN Proof. Don't check anything else and close the Device configuration window. Then click on Create CD and then Burn to commence writing.
Q. What about discjuggler?
A. Discjuggler is for advanced users only and will only work if your reader can accurately read the pre-gap. If you have and know how to use discjuggler; for read settings check Scan gaps/indices, Ignore read errors and RAW read; for write settings just check RAW write. If it works, you've got the best possible copy. If not, tough; use one of the methods set out above.
Q. Why is a working discjuggler copy superior to a copy made with any other soft?
A. For reasons that I won't discuss on an open forum. Send me a PM if you really want to know. Maybe, I'll answer you and maybe I won't.
Q. I've got a 2 sheep burner and tried your methods but the copies don't work. Why?
A. 3 possibilities:
a) most likely, you stuffed up;
b) you're trying to play the copy from a burner without either ccd's hide cdr media or alcohol's ignore media type running; run the copy from an cd rom or dvd rom not a burner, if possible; if you've only got a burner, you must enable either hide cdr media or ignore media type to use the copy;
c) you're trying to run the copy from a different rom than the one you installed the game from; most sd 2.8 games only run from the installation drive unless you hack your registry.
Q. I was able to make a working copy with [insert soft used other than those set out above] with my [insert make and model of your burner]. Won't that work for everyone with the same burner?
A. No.
Q. I tried alcohol with my 0 or 1 sheep burner but it didn't work. What can I do?
A. You can try other soft but they probably won't make you a good non-emu copy either. Try making a copy that needs emulation instead.
III. MAKING AN EMU COPY
Q. What soft do I use?
A. CloneCD v 4.2.0.2. Don't bother with anything else.
Q. How do I make an emu copy with ccd?
A. Just click on the Copy CD button and use the Protected PC Game profile to both read and write.
Q. What do I need to do to play using the emu copy?
A. You must have ccd on your system and hide cdr media must be enabled from the system tray.
