The avisynth error of "a blank screen with red scambled text on the bottom" simply means you have a problem AVI or the wrong codec to supoort the AVI installed (regardless if WMP appears to play it okay or not). Check the avi with DivFix and DivXRepair, if no errors, then uninstall what ever DivX and Xvid codec you have and install Xvid 1.0.2 from http://www.koepi.org/ and Divx 5.2.1 from www.divx.com. Then try again.
      Cheers,

You also should install a Mpeg2 encoder/decoder codec.

Okay, try loading the avi into VirtualDUB, set Audio to Full Processing Mode. Set Video to Full Processing Mode and in Video, set the Compression to DivX or Xvid codec and set its bitrate to something higher than the original (use GSPOT to tell you the original bitrate) then Save AVI. This might take an hour or so to complete, but then try converting this new avi.
      Cheers,
      CM
