      Here how it works

      you should choose 4:3 or 16:9 according to your preferences. I choose 16:9 because I own a widescreen TV, but some people prefer 4:3.

      Now for the arrange method:

      You should choose fullscreen ONLY if the source movie has a perfect aspect ratio (and that does not happen very often). So, in order to have a perfect aspect ratio you must choose 'add borders' or 'crop'. I repeat; only these two options keep the correct aspect. Fullscreen WILL cause deformation unless the source has a perfect AR. THis means that most of the times you'll want 'add borders, keep aspect ratio'.

      Now, there's a small detail that can be important for people that generally use 16:9 for the DVD AR. If the source has an aspect ratio smaller than 16:9 (for example 1.66:1, or any other between 4:3 and 16:9), choosing 16:9 and 'add borders' will in fact add left and right borders.

      So my advice is that you choose 16:9 if the source is 16:9 or greatter, and 4:3 if the source is smaller than 16:9.

      Hope this helps

      After my last post I thought that maybe it would be better to give a more precise guideline on how to choose the correct settings for aspect ratio and arrange method.

      When you choose the AVI in TFM, there's a panel at the right where you can see the source aspect ratio. Get this value and use the following tables to choose:

      Source AR Aspect ratio Arrange method
      -----------------------------------------------------------------
      < 1.293 4:3 Crop video, keep aspect ratio (1)
      1.293 <> 1.373 4:3 Fullscreen (2)
      1.373 <> 1.724 4:3 Add borders, keep aspect ratio
      1.724 <> 1.831 16:9 Fullscreen (3)
      > 1.831 16:9 Add borders, keep aspect ratio
      ------------------------------------------------------------------

      If you are a 4:3 fanatic and want to always use this AR for your final DVD, then use this table instaed

      Source AR Aspect ratio Arrange method
      -----------------------------------------------------------------
      < 1.293 4:3 Crop video, keep aspect ratio (1)
      1.293 <> 1.373 4:3 Fullscreen (2)
      > 1.373 4:3 Add borders, keep aspect ratio
      ------------------------------------------------------------------

      (1) 'Add borders' will add left and right borders in thi case, so let's crop
      (2) this is 4:3 +- 3%, so we can loose the borders
      (3) this is 16:9 +- 3%, so we can loose the borders

      This settings are based on my personal view of this matter and do not reflect any kind of scientific knowledge.

      A suggestion for 'THe Mask':

      Create an option 'Preferred DVD aspect ratio' in the options section.
      Then, using this value, set aspect ratio and arrange method upon choosing the AVI according to these tables (or any other values you see fit)

      I know that TFM already does some kind of automatic selection, but I can't figure out the logic in it.

      Cheers

      Thanks Carlos for the explanation of Aspect Ratio's. I will try to add the suggested option in version 1.4 because I am planning the release of version 1.3 tonight.

      And on Friday I leave for a nice holliday.

      @CarlosJorge

      A suggestion for 'THe Mask':

      Create an option 'Preferred DVD aspect ratio' in the options section.
      Then, using this value, set aspect ratio and arrange method upon choosing the AVI according to these tables (or any other values you see fit)
      What do you exactly mean with the option ''Preferred DVD aspect ratio'. What would you like it to do?

      @The Mask

      I you ask me this option isn't really necessary. I always prefer 16:9, which means I only do 4:3 encodings if the source aspect ratio is smaller than 1.78 (16:9).

      But I know that there are people that prefer 4:3 and will use it no matter what the source AR is.

      So, that option could work like this:

      If user prefers 4:3 then TFM would always default to 4:3;
      if 16:9 is chosen than TFM would propose 4:3 only if source AR is smaller than 16:9.

      Cheers
